Plugin Tests on Wordfence and All in One WP Security

plugins_WP-300x300So I decided to add a bit of security to the tablet site here via a plugin. There are two that both came with very high ratings so I decided to try them both. Each has it’s own advantages and disadvantages and or quirks on the tablet here. Remember this is not a review using a full blown Linux server, but instead just how these plugins functioned on an Asus Tablet running Android 4.2.2.

The first one I tested was the All in One WP Security plugin. It functions quite well and has a huge number of options. It primarily walks you through all the basics of WordPress security, such as display names/usernames, changing the admin account name, updating the WordPress database prefix, and several other items. Of course there are some limitations like changing file permissions which simply can’t be done on Android. There just isn’t a chmod function. Other than that I would give the plugin a 5 star rating for use on an Android based server.

The second plugin I tested was Wordfence Security which is full of all sorts of wonderful settings and is quite impressive in its scanning ability. The plugin can scan your entire installation for backdoors and malicious code. For that reason it is the one I decided to leave active. The plugin also has some very slick caching options built in that theoretically speed up your server. I am not going to test the Falcon caching engine just yet because I would have to update the permalinks on this site. Wordfence has one minor glitch which may or may not be related to the browser I am using on my home PC. But should you install it, you might find that when you login, you just get a blank page. Worry not, you are logged in, just go to the home page. I will keep trying to figure out what is going on there and update this article if I find a cause/cure. This plugin also gets a 5 star rating.
