In the most shocking move of the week, as far as software updates go, T-Mobile has decided to update two rather modest devices to Android 8.0 Oreo. I’m talking about the Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime and the Samsung Galaxy Tab E. Let’s see what the deal is.
These are both affordable models, priced at $200 or so, maybe even less. Interestingly, not even the Galaxy Note 8 and S8 have Android 8.0 Oreo, but these lower end units do. It’s also true that we don’t have a launch date for the software update, but I expect the software will come till the Spring. The Galaxy Tab E 8.0 was launched in January 2016 with Android 5.1.1 and got bumped up to 7.1.
The Galaxy Tab E 9.6 is even older, launched in July 2016 with Android 5.1 and also updated to Android 7.0. It sounds surprising for me to hear that a 1.5 GB RAM device gets Oreo. They are quad core Snapdragon machines and they also have 3G and WiFi versions. Oreo should bring features like notification badges, snooze for notifications, picture in picture mode, Google Play Protect and so much more.
Project Treble is also in the mix, although I doubt it’ll be useful for future updates in this case.
