Samsung and Microsoft have been dominating the headlines regarding the foldable phones, but Huawei is coming strong from the left field, with a fresh partnership. They just hooked up with BOE, who will make foldable screen panels for them. Let’s see what the scoop is.
We received a promise that a foldable prototype was in the works from 2017, courtesy of Huawei CEO Richard Yu. Now thanks to a Korean publication we learn that BOE and Huawei’s product will become commercially available in November. It’s said to be an 8 incher with a flexible screen and serving as a rival for a Galaxy Note 9 or maybe the 2019 Galaxy X.
BOE is actually playing in multiple fields, having 4 different phone designs and two companies in the mix. Samsung comes to mind, but Samsung Display will probably handle that. Names like Xiaomi, ZTE or Lenovo come up, plus Oppo, who recently filed a patent for its own flexible machine. BOE is keeping busy these days, with a presentation of new display solutions at SID Display Week 2018.
At their booth you could see flexible AMOLEDs, which could be bent, folded and rolled, even flapped in the wind. Robots with flexible displays, fingerprint scanners included anywhere on the screen and many more. One of the stars of the BOE booth was a foldable all screen AMOLED panel that can bent dynamically with a radius of just 1 mm. It takes 100.000 bends like a champ.
They had both a 5.99 inch foldable phone and a 7.56 inch foldable tablet in the mix.
