Today’s Second Video Worth Sharing: The Huawei P20 Pro Smartphone Full Review

By Tim

Today we have another great review from Andrew over at AMDTech. This one is on the Huawei P20 Pro and unlike the huge rush of reviews on the day or two after this thing was released, this one comes to us from a reviewer I trust, without the hype and points out all the pros and cons.

I have a short list of reviewers I trust which you can view by going to our YouTube channel here and checking the playlist for Reviewers I Trust. Chris over at TechTablets and Andrew at AMDTech are at the top of my list. Both are nit-picky and will point out all sorts of things that might make you not want to buy a product. Every reviewer on my list follows that same formula. Honesty first, little to no hype at all!

So the Huawei P20 Pro is an amazing flagship phone and takes killer photos. Is it the best, well, that is obviously best left to those who have actually tested one out thoroughly and that is why we have the video below!
So watch the video, reach your own conclusions and make sure to subscribe to Andrew’s channel if tech info is your thing!

Today’s Video Worth Sharing: What To Do With An LT 2016u Netbook?

By Tim

Gateway LT2016u

This video comes to us from none other than….US! I am sorry, the video is rather long and a bit rambling, but it does show that even some old equipment may be useful for something.

I actually got up very early this morning and brought along my trusty flash drive and got a newer version of Firefox to work on this ancient dinosaur! So we now have a functional Windows XP, (32 bit) spare PC for use as, uh, well, perhaps a web browsing device.

However with the 1024 x 600 display, we are not talking a great experience. The speakers also stink but if you plug in some external one the sound is excellent.

But hopefully folks will leave some comments on the YouTube channel suggesting to us what this thing might be good for. After all, a functional 10.1 inch notebook (yeah, I know, netbook), with WiFi, 3 full size USB 2.0 ports and reasonable battery life, along with a surprisingly huge hard drive (160 GB), is simply not something to toss in the trash.

So below you will find the video, sorry I sound tired but it was about 1 AM when I finally had reached my conclusions on what to do with this thing…

Tonight’s Video Worth Sharing: Replace Your Workshop Laptop With Something Better!

By Tim

Much Better Than a Laptop/Notebook

I have been posting a series of videos on where I work/updating an ancient Gateway Mx6453 laptop/notebook and making it useful again.

So I have achieved success with that, but in truth, in our work environment we need something a bit better than a notebook PC.

It gets hot in the shop here and to be honest the main PC the boss uses is so out of date that we worry they may declare it a PC Historical monument! It is a Dell M6300 (Precision Line I believe).

It has absolutely the worst viewing angles of any laptop/notebook I have ever seen and is well on it’s way to dying, due to the heat/cold at work. It was created as a business class laptop and not one for a workshop, non-air-conditioned office type device.

This not so short video will cover my recommendations for a replacement of the aforementioned dinosaur.

Below are links to a few devices I mention in the video. But I always suggest shopping about for the best prices!

Zotac Ci327 Mini- PC : https://amzn.to/2MNM9L0
Viewsonic 22 inch IPS Monitor: https://amzn.to/2tibjsL
Silicon Power SSD: https://amzn.to/2ttmRsp
HyperX 8 GB DDR3L 1866 MHZ Ram : https://amzn.to/2KauD1F

So as usual, watch the video, Like the video, share the video on every piece of social media you have access to.

Here we go….

Tonight’s Video Worth Sharing: An Update on Making The Gateway MX6453 Useful Again

By Tim

Last night I posted about how the boss asked if I could make this old Gateway MX6453 useful as a PC for work. I was sort of thinking, oh my god, this thing is a dinosaur,  but I set to work to figure out how to rescue this beast and make it functional for our work environment.

This morning I got to work early and attacked the problem head on, first checking to see if we could even boot to a USB flash drive and was surprised to find that yes, it was possible.

However…yeah there is always one of those, it did not like my first test trying to boot up with a Windows 7 iso on a bootable flash. Probably because as I vaguely remember there was some sort of 4 GB limitation. So that left me no choice but to go with a 64 bit operating system, that has an ISO file that is much smaller and, yeah, you guessed it, Linux!

I went with Linux Lite 4.0, which is a distro I have tested on all my devices here, usually in a Virtual Machine, but in this case we went full install onto the hard drive, using about 60 or so GB of the free space.

The install worked, all the hardware was detected, the Wifi, the trackpad, the display, the keyboard and all the function keys, the sound and even one of our WiFi based printers.

So was this a success? Oh hell yes! Is it the fastest PC on earth, nope, but can it get the job done, yep!

Below you will find the video…

Tonight We Have One More Video! This one On Attempting to Resurrect a Gateway MX6453 Notebook

By Tim

Howdy folks! This one is from our channel and it is just a bit of insanity…or perhaps genius!? We will not know the answers to that until 24-48 hrs have passed, because this is something I don’t even want to deal with, but…yeah it is a challenge and I must try!

The boss brought in an ancient Gateway notebook/laptop late this afternoon and asked of I could get it running as a second PC in our front office. After finally getting it to boot and checking a few specs I did determine that maybe….just maybe we could get some 64 bit software on board and perhaps use it in a minimal role.

Obviously at some point many laptops are simply good as boat anchors, but I am thinking this one might surprise us all!

So watch the video below for details and make sure to subscribe to see what will happen over the next few days!
