Fresh Microsoft Surface Book TV Ads Emphasize Creative and Artistic Features of the Device (Video)

By Radu Iorga

surface book ad

Microsoft debuted its very first laptop, the Surface Book earlier this month and offered preorders the next day. Then the uniquely hinged 2 in 1 device started arriving on customers doorsteps on October 26th and now it’s time for the marketing gears to start turning. A series of ads for the products have began popping up on TVs.

These 15 second long TV ads for the Surface Book are focused on creativity and the artistic nature of the product. They all deliver the same message and one of them shows a person recording music and editing, another shows video editing and finally one shows how a portrait is drawn. Relegating the Surface Book to a mere content editor is a risky strategy, making this seem like a “me too” device.

In fact, it’s a very powerful laptop, with the first tests proving it’s even more powerful than the latest MacBooks. Keep in mind that this product comes with a screen that detaches from the body and can be used as a separate tablet. Price starts at $1499 for the 128 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM and Intel Core i5 version and you can get the product with up to 16 GB RAM, a Core i7 6th gen chipset and 1 TB of SSD. You can get it here .

This is How You Turn an Old Tablet Into a Cool Mirror (Video)

By Radu Iorga

Ever wanted to see notifications, weather info and news displayed through the mirror while brushing your teeth or getting dressed? Well, thanks to a Github project and the YouTube channel Adafruit Industries we can now do that using an older tablet.

All you need is said tablet, that you need to connect to the PC, enable USB debugging mode and install the required software. Then the process involves getting hold of a plastic two way mirror. Next up the tablet is attached with tape, while the back of the mirror is covered with a dark material, to highlight the tablet screen. The slate gets connected to a power outlet and there you have it: a mirror on the wall, that shows info and notifications.

This DIY project relied on Hannah Mitt’s HomeMirror app on Github and included items like velctro tape, black construction paper, packing tape and a plastic 2 way mirror. I wouldn’t exactly place this in the bathroom, since water splashes may get to the power supply eventually. You know what would be cool? An external battery pack that would last the slate a day and then be charged separately and leave the mirror independent.

A Follow-up on My Dragon Touch X10….just a few items to cover.

dragon_touch_X10So previously I reported on my purchase of a super cheap, Chinese Tablet known as a Dragon Touch X10 that I purchased from Amazon.

So far I have noted a few glitches such as the camera. But let’s face it we don’t generally buy low end tablets for their cameras now do we?

I also noted a bit of lag after I installed a second “user account” on the tablet. After doing a complete factory reset, all was well with one user. To put it mildly, with 2 users the tablet was horrible, with one, it beats the hell out of my Asus Me572C for web use. Why you may ask and I do not have that answer just yet.

But after re-installing all my favorite apps, I can say that aside from the camera, this tablet performs flawlessly! I will tell you that is nowhere near the quality nor speed of my little Asus, but on the other hand, after installing all the Google Apps and a few of my regular apps it still has 10 GB free which is very important for those folks who buy inexpensive tablets, (do a search on here for Polaroid and you will learn why).

So I still give this tablet Tim’s seal of Approval for “super cheap” tablets that are still super decent. Below you will find another in a long line of crappy videos, this one shot using the built-in screen recorder utility on the Tablet and the game Riptide GP2….keep in mind to look only at how smooth the video is, not the fuzziness of the video, since these are recorded at what appears to be a high compression.

ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 Z580CA Unboxing: One of the Most Elegant Slates of the Year Taken Out of the Box (Video)

By James A.

ASUS-ZenPad-S-8-0_034

ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 is a tablet that was announced in June at Computex 2015 and it has arrived on our test table now. The device we’re testing is the version Z580CA, priced at $199 on Amazon in the most basic version or $299 for the one with more storage.

The box is rather slim and elegant and inside it we find the USB cable, charger and manual. The ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 Z580CA measures 6.6 mm in thickness, weighs 298 grams and packs an 8 inch display with a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution. The same screen has a Gorilla Glass 3 protection, full lamination and anti fingerprint coating. The slate packs an Intel Atom Z3580 quad core processor, clocked at 2.3 GHz, 4 GB of RAM and 16, 32 or 64 GB of storage.

This model also brings a GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, plus a back 8 megapixel camera and front 5 MP shooter. One of the features standing out here are the two front speakers with DTS HD technology and Sonicmaster too. There’s an USB Type C port at the bottom, a microSD card slot and the device comes in black or white. The battery here is a 15.2 Wh unit, according to the packaging.

ASUS claims that this ZenPad is inspired by the world of fashion and the metal plate at the back ends with a leather-like texture. The design also involves a diamond cut technology and a few other top notch technologies, like TruVivid and Tru2Life. We’ll be back with a full review, once we’re done with the battery life test and benchmarks.

Nokia N1 Unboxing: First USB Type C Tablet Unboxed By Tablet-News, Not as iPad-Like as One May Think (Video)

By James A.

DSCN9355

The Nokia N1 is a tablet coming straight out of Finland, created by the Nokia core, not the Nokia Devices that has been integrated within Microsoft. It’s an iPad Mini-style device, that has just arrived on our test table and you can watch its unboxing below.

This product is priced at around $380 on Amazon and it was announced in November 2014. Then it was launched in January 2015 and it debuted in China, where it became such a big hit, that it sold out in 4 consecutive flash sales. The box of the product reminds me of the older HTC boxes and inside we find the manual, charger and USB Type C cable.

The slate measures 6.9 mm in thickness, weighs 318 grams and has an aluminum unibody design. It packs a 7.9 inch screen with a 4:3 aspect and a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution, as well as Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Inside there’s a quad core Intel Atom Z3580 processor, clocked at 2.3 GHz, 2 GB of LPDDR3 RAM and at the back there’s an 8 megapixel camera.

Upfront there’s a 5 MP shooter and I have to say that this design feels a bit less like an iPad Mini than I expected. The OS is Android Lollipop covered up with the Nokia Z Launcher, that offers you a screen of the apps you use most and allows you to draw letters to find apps, mails, contacts and info straight into the homescreen. We’ll be back with a full review soon enough.
