A Few Days Ago I Wrote About The Meltdown And Spectre Security Flaws, Here Are Some Videos Explaining Them

By Tim

Less than a week ago we all heard about the security flaws that affect many Intel, AMD and even ARM processors. I even posted an article about it. As you may already know this is something that could potentially affect every one of us, but there is a lot of confusion about these two exploits.

Presumably Microsoft is going to be issuing an update on Tuesday January 9th and I assume other OS vendors will already be releasing patches or have already released them. Remember, this affects Windows, Mac, iOS, Chrome, Android and Linux devices.

Because folks seem to like videos I am going to give you folks 3 videos that may or may not clear things up.

So in no particular order, here are those videos. Keep in mind that there is a lot of info that we do not know just yet, but these will explain the basics without being too tech oriented.

That is all for now,

Tim

Today’s Video Worth Sharing: CES 2018, It Sure Does Take a Lot Of Gear to Cover This Event.

By Tim

We all shoot videos these days because we have that capability on our smartphones but for the folks whole produce the slick video reviews I share here quite often, well lets just say it’s a whole new ballgame!

I was actually stunned with just how much gear that Andrew over at AMDTech is bringing to the CES 2018 show! Of course he has the advantage of living in Las Vegas, so there isn’t the hassle of transporting all this stuff through airports, etc. However the amount of stuff he is bringing to the show is mind boggling.

I believe that the only thing he isn’t bringing to the show is the kitchen sink! Below is a short list of what I remember from the video:

  • 2 Sony Cameras
  • extra lenses
  • lights
  • a camera backpack/bag
  • 2 laptops/notebooks
  • extra batteries
  • 2 SSD’s to transfer files
  • extra SD cards
  • a tripod
  • iPhone X

That is only what I remember from the video. There is actually more. So below you will find the video and of course I suggest subscribing to his channel if this stuff interests you.

So let us get right to that video.

That is all for now,

Tim

The HiBook News: Edition Number 990 Or Thereabouts…This Episode: Not A Whole Lot To Report Except…

By Tim

Wow, the title left ya’all hanging didn’t it? Yeah, there really isn’t anything new on the tablet server front since it is still sitting on a large scale shared hosting platform until I can get my cable connected.

However I can still report that the old Chuwi HiBook is still the best overall portable device I own due to its size, speed and usefulness along with decent battery life.  The faster RAM after a BIOS tweak really does make it quite a bit snappier than the Hi12, which of course still has the far superior display and of course that huge 11600 mAh battery, but lots of little annoying glitches, such as not being able to tweak the BIOS!

Both of these devices are still available. Although for the most part you can only find the HiBook Pro  with a super hi-res 2560 x 1600 screen and larger battery, both of which are a bonus! The HiBook Pro is a steal right now at $182!

Lately though I am thinking that once I get cable back online I might just opt for a 7-8 inch super cheap tablet with Windows 10 and see what I can do with it as a server.  I think I have done all I can with the current smaller 10.1 inch HiBook to prove it’s value.

So that is all the news I have for today except for the fact that it is too damned cold outside here! But that will be gone by tomorrow and the world will be right again.

That is all,

Tim

Tonight’s Video Worth Sharing: AMDTechReviews Hits 20K Subscribers.

By Tim

You are probably thinking what? Who cares? Why is this important? Well kiddies it is important and as I wrote about months ago there are only 2 YouTube reviewers who I really depend on for honest reviews that cover both the pros and cons of the latest tech products.

Those are Andrew over at AMDTechReviews and Chris over at TechTablets. Both offer first class video content and totally and completely honest reviews. They point out the flaws in products they test. This is important! Quoting off the specs on the latest notebook or tablet is not always the entire story, but delving into storage capacities, pricing and those items that might be a deal breaker for some folks, but not others are still important.

If you are the type to research your modern tech purchases before pulling the trigger then these two guys will probably have covered the item or they will shortly.

So here is a short video from Andrew concerning his upcoming projects and thanking folks for subscribing. If you like tech info videos I highly suggest subscribing to his channel!

If you do subscribe, add a comment telling him Tim over at tabletserver.com sent you!

That is all for now,

Meltdown and Spectre Flaws Pretty Much Affect ALL of Us! PSA Here!

By Tim

About 48 Hrs ago we all learned about the major flaws in Intel, AMD and ARM architectures that essentially leave all systems powered by these devices open to huge security holes that would allow hackers to essentially steal your data.

Yeah, that is a scary scenario and it means that every corporation, every server, every PC/notebook/laptop/tablet/smartphone is at risk! Check the end of this article for some links on the current info available. You can also Google it to find the latest info.

Ignore the hype for a moment and take a step back.  This might mean a whole new crop of processors based on totally new instruction sets and yeah, it may mean that every device out there now is totally obsolete.

Think about that for a moment, that means literally billions of smartphones, tablets, notebooks, laptops and servers being relegated to the junk pile.

Perhaps we all get patches for what ever operating system we have, but based on what I read this may be just a band-aid process.  Remember this is not really an operating system issue, it is the actual CPU architecture issue. We have essentially been running the same architectures for decades  and it may require a complete re-think from those providing these SoC’s, CPU/GPU’s, etc.

Patching software is easy, and “might” fix the issue, but patching your processor isn’t easy or damned near impossible. So now we wait… and in the meantime hackers are dancing their ‘happy dance’.

On the other hand this does mean that we might seen an entire new generation of processor/motherboard technology and while being expensive for many folks, it might actually mean a huge boom in new device sales in 6 -8 months.

My advice, is to give this issue serious consideration before purchasing any new device, because you might need a new very shortly to keep your information secure. The last thing I want to do is to keep people from clicking on my ads on this site, but it is my ethical duty to provide this info and therefore I have to post this.

I suggest searching  your favorite search engines to keep up on the latest updates to this absolutely scary flaw in your devices!

Here are a few videos for your education, by no means complete in info, but worth watching!

That is all for this evening,

Tim
