Tablets do make it super easy to run your website from anywhere!

SoASUS-Memo-Pad-ME572C-Hands-On-003 here as I sit in my car outside the local laundramat doing a few loads of laundry and courtesy of today’s technology, I am able to update my website and post several articles, all while sitting in my car.
This is a truly amazing time folks! Here I sit listening to tunes in a car using my cheapo BLU Android as a hotspot and editing pages via my trusty ME572C connected by the aforementioned hotspot, to an inexpensive Dell PC running VMware on Linux Debian 7.2.
All of this courtesy of yourfreewordpress.com. Which incidentally has a few free demos and slots for at least 2 more 2 gb WordPress sites. They have several demo sites running over there if you would like to try WordPress yourself. Check them out!

Must have apps for an Android Tablet.

android_apps1We all know that most tablets come pre-installed with the usual popular apps, but here are a few a my favorites.

These are the ones that you should have on your tablet if you happen to be a bit of a geek, as am I.

networkInfo_ IINetwork Info II – a great little app that will show you ton’s of info on your current network location and IP address.

Moocha_Telnet1 Moocha Telnet Lite is a super handy app if you need to connect via ssh or telnet to your server.

fing1Fing is a little tool that will show you who is on your current network and what they are up to.

wifi_analyzer1Wifi Analyzer is a super handy tool to check out signal strength and make sure your wifi isn’t sitting on top of your neighbor’s channel.

There are lots of apps out there but these are the ones I find indispensable. So what are your favorite geek apps?

Got WordPress? Having cron (scheduling issues)? Running Linux?

webmin1If you are like me you wouldn’t ever dream of running a web server on the holy swiss cheese of security known as Windows, not to mention the ridiculous pricing and lousy support.

So if you do have a WordPress site running at home or maybe elsewhere you might run into issues where your wp_cron.php file just ain’t hacking the program. Take this little server here for instance, since I switched over to a Linux LAMP stack from Turnkey Linux I have had to manually update my feeds via the RSS Multi Importer plugin. Even my little Asus Tablet running android and KSWeb did the automated tasks in WordPress better than this super, duper, VM with twice the ram and 100 times the disk space.

So I read, and I Googled and I learned and in just under 5 hrs last night I solved my cron issues. This virtual host now imports feeds every 15 minutes or so and the others I have running on this machine do them every 30 mins to an hour.

How you do that? You might be asking… well I took some advice from what I learned on the web, then had to insert a bunch of common sense/logic to replace the lack of decent help from the pure Linux geeks who assume we all know what is going on in their heads….no offense geeks, you put out the info, but left out many details.

I also used a super easy piece of software to edit my Linux cron scheduler, it’s called Webmin and probably makes the true Linux gurus squeamish, but it works just dandy.

The only command you need is the one below:

wget http://mywebsite.com/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron=1 > /dev/null 2>&1

Note: If you don’t happen to have access to cron on your web host I will suggest you try out a site such as EasyCron.com. Keep in mind the setup/command is still the same with the exception of not needing the ‘wget’ command.

Below you will find the crappy video I made showing how I set things up on this site to grab news feeds every 15 minutes,

So you wish to run a Web Server? Maybe? If NOT don’t Read this!

dbcrashSo every so often it has probably occurred to you thoughts like…”well damn, this twit has a web server running on a damned Tablet! I need to learn how to do that.”

In truth, all the tablet stuff is already covered here on this web site in any one of a dozen plus articles. Just check out the featured category….

But….this site has moved onto a VM (Virtual Machine) on my very old Dell PC. That saga is already posted here in various articles. But you may want to learn a quick and dirt lesson on how to setup your very own VM/Linux/Web Server at your home, and that is where today’s stunningly crappy video will help you….watch, enjoy and try to learn…and remember, it IS a free screen capture program, no bitchin’. Thanks!

Occasionally I am a dumb-ass…especially when upgrading my PC.

JpegSo today I received my shiny new Intel Core Duo E6700 processor. It will make this server run much faster and increase my overall computing experience by roughly 20%.  2.66 GHz versus 2.13 GHz, oh happy day!

Oh wait, the dumb-ass who ordered this processor failed to order any thermal compound! You can’t put in a new processor without fresh thermal compound!

There you have it, my geek-fest of super fastness has been interrupted by failing to note that when you upgrade you need to order all the stuff you need.

Don’t let this happen to you. When upgrading anything with a heat sink pay attention to details.  Sure, I can probably find some in town somewhere tomorrow, but that means another day of a very fast computer that could be very faster!

If you don’t see this as humorous, you need to take that stick out of you ass and lighten up. It is a lesson, but at least I realized the mistake before installing the processor and frying it.
