Tonight’s Video Worth Sharing: Need a Great Free Screen Capture Program? Try Out OBS Studio

By Tim

Tonight we have a video I just posted on our new channel here on YouTube. The easiest way to show folks what is happening on your screen is to capture your display and there are a number of tools out there to do this. Last night I stumbled on to OBS Studio.

This is an excellent screen capture program for Windows, Mac and Linux. It also does live streaming! Yeah and the bonus here is, it is free!

In the video posted below I barely scratch the surface of using this product since I was just using it for the first time and I only watched one quick beginners guide on its use. However there are literally dozens of excellent tutorials on YouTube on how to use this software.

So let us get right on to the video and see just how well this software works on my very “Cheap Tech” Zotac PC with an N3150 processor.

That is all I have at this moment, except to request that folks visit the channel, subscribe, and “Like” the videos and share them!

Google Developing AltOS Mode for PixelBook; Here’s Proof

By Radu Iorga

The Google Pixelbook may not have been selling exactly like hot cakes, but it’s got one thing going for it: the ability to experiment. The flagship Chrome OS machine has been getting action from Android, Play Store, Fuchsia and probably even Andromeda in experimental fashion. Now it’s ready to get a so called “AltOS” mode.

It’s not very clear what this mode does, but there’s a chance it’ll let people do some dual boot action on the device. Imagine booting another OS other than Chrome OS on the machine, how cool is that? It may also just be a mode to let developers boot more easily into Fuchsia OS, Google’s OS that’s under development right now. The commit comments show that “go/vboot-windows” is mentioned, so we may also get Windows as an option on the Pixelbook, natively even.

The PixelBook was by no means a bad machine, but the high price was the problem with it. It’s more than capable of running Windows or whatever other OS you throw at it. Now if only Google figured out a way to alternate between Chrome OS and the other platform faster and more efficient than those dual boot Android/Windows tablets out there… Those take even minutes to switch between OSes.

I still have my money on Fuchsia though.

Apple Gets More Patents Covering iPad Pro Smart Keyboard Features

By James A.

Apple continues its huge run of receiving patents for multiple products, with today’s patent covering new features for the iPad Pro Smart Keyboard, as well as augmented reality and solar powered gadgets. We have the scoop below.

The US Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of no less than 55 newly granted patents for Apple Inc, which cover the Apple Smart keyboard and the new features that it may receive one day. We also saw a new patent for the Mac Pro, one for AR and one for solar power energy management, in order to charge mobile devices. But what we’re most interested in is certainly the Smart Keyboard accessory.

The patent is titled “Flexible Keyboard accessory for a portable electronic device”. The document states that the accessory device may include a foldable cover, which in turn includes an attachment feature, that’s configured to couple with an electronic device. A hinge is also mentioned with the foldable cover in the mix and a rotating form factor. So, while Apple isn’t bringing out foldable phones or tablets anytime soon, at least their tablet accessories fold.

The keyboard assembly is also listed with a vent system, that includes an opening which provides the device with air, plus a channel coupled with the opening and to a key of the keyboard assembly. Letting a tablet and a keyboard get a vent system means that more horse power is coming to the iPad in the near future, that’s my prediction.

Dropbox Now Supports Full Screen iPad Navigation, Drag and Drop on iOS

By Radu Iorga

Dropbox just got updated in its iOS version, now support a few extra useful gimmicks on the iPad and iPhones. We have them listed below and they’re the kind of features to ease interaction with files, even if you’re not using a PC.

I have to admit I’m not a big fan of Dropbox on the iPad, because a lot of screen space is wasted. This time the file hosting service has launched a new update for Apple devices, which includes full screen file navigation features for the iDevices. You will just need to collapse the preview pane to see the files’ full names, so you know for sure you are clicking on work documents and photos, not your cat pics.

Drag and dropping files around is also supported now, when you tap and hold said files, as long as the device runs on iOS 11. This makes it easier to arrange your files in a certain way and organize them in folders. You can also grant access to files while on the go, so if a work mate wants to access something you can let them straight from the push notification.

Improved text file support is also here, with better previewing and text editing for over 120 file extensions. The best thing is that you can edit documents without having to use other apps to open them. You can download the app here.

By Radu Iorga

Dell unveiled this week two new laptops that are part of its Inspiron lineup, only they’re a bit different from the average Inspiron. How? Well, they come with AMD Ryzen Mobile processors. More details are available below.

AMD debuted its lineup of Ryzen Mobile chips last year, proposing an alternative to the Intel Kaby Lake Refresh chipsets. The new Dell Inspiron models start at $700 and they include the Inspiron 13 7000 2 in 1 convertible and the Inspiron 15 5000. Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is a 19.2 mm thick laptop, that’s made of brushed aluminum and it weighs up to 1.75 kilograms, depending on the chosen config.

You can choose a Ryzen 5 2500U processor or the Ryzen 7 2700U chip, plus between 8 GB and 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD storage. The notebook has a 13.3 inch 1920 x 1080 pixel display of the touchscreen variety, plus an IR camera with Windows Hello and all the connectivity you need: USB Type-C 3.1, USB Type-A, USB 2.0, HDMI 1.4 and SD card slot. A 42 Whr battery rounds up the list.

The Dell Inspiron 15 5000 uses a Ryzen 3 2200U, Ryzen 5 2500U or Ryzen 7 2700U processor, 8 or 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of HDD. The screen is a touch one, with Full HD resolution and a 42 Whr battery is here too. Connectivity is the same as above and the price should be $630 and up.
