Google Fuchsia OS Gets Detailed Demo; This May Replace Android in the Future (Video)

By Radu Iorga

I don’t want to get into “memberries”, but remember when Google was prepping fresh new OSes for the future? They were coming up with Andromeda and Fuchsia, with plenty of leaks over the past 2 years. Now Fuchsia OS registered a big time leak, as it’s been demoed in the video below.

Last we heard about it was in May last year, when a series of screenshots from its UI were leaked online. Back then it ran on tablets and mobile and now it’s seen on a Pixelbook, courtesy of Ars Technica. The call it the “experimental, top secret OS” from Google. In May last year it was pretty barebones and many features were lacking, but now it seems to have evolved.

The Fuchsia system UI was written with a cross platform SDK dubbed “Flutter” and over the past year had shut down the compatible iOS and Android builds. Fuchsia comes with a Vulkan-based graphics stack and no emulator can support the new graphics API. It was only supported on the Intel NUC PCs from 2015 and the Acer Switch Alpha 12 laptop. But then recently the Google Pixelbook was added as a supported device.

Ars Technica ran the OS on that exact device, as sort of an app on top of Android. The only things that work are a guest mode used to log in, a bunch of apps and the simulation of the UI. The Internet browser can’t load full pages and the music app doesn’t work. At least you can explore its functioning modes, like smartphone, tablet and laptop.

There’s also a Quick Settings shade, multitasking UI with a variety of split screen modes for apps, probably the best thing about this release. The home screen is the “Armadillo” user shell that was loaded on Android by tinkerers months ago. This time a lot of things work instead of being placeholders. At the center of the screen there’s a status readout showing the date and time, Fuchsia button and connectivity, plus battery.

There’s a lot of work to be done, but the project is coming along fine, especially in the multitasking. Be sure to watch the Ars Technica demo video below. Expect to see a breakthrough at I/O 2018.

You can see the video at this link.

LG Patents New Type of Folding Phone, That Becomes a Tablet

By Radu Iorga

After so many leaks of foldable Samsung or Microsoft phones that may or may not become tablets, today we find something similar from LG. This new type of folding phone is detailed in the patents below and we actually have two versions of it.

One of the LG patents was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization and it shows a folding hybrid, that’s both tablet and phone. It describes the unit as a “Mobile phone with a flexible display, which can be folded in half”. It was filed back in July 2017 and published on January 12th 2018. The first version of the machine is a foldable phone, that features the camera on the back panel.

Once it’s folded, the device can display info like the time, date and weather on the front screen. The second version is pretty similar, except for the fact that when the device is folded, the rear cover is pushed to one side and reveals a transparent section on the front right hand side.

The sidebar bit can be used to show the time and notifications. The rear of the device also integrates a camera module. The solid lines in the illustration are supposed to show “claimed features” and the broken ones show what the rest of the device is supposed to look like.

The dotted lines in the design patent aren’t covered by said patent. It seems like a pretty elegant design this one, but still I find it bulky… The transparent piece is an innovation compared to the Microsoft and Samsung foldables.

Razer Phone 2 Already In the Works, Bundled With Project Linda and Coming at IFA 2018

By Radu Iorga

Back at CES 2018 Razer came out with the Project Linda initiative, a laptop dock especially designed for the Razer Phone. It expands its battery life and screen estate, plus adds a bigger keyboard and bigger screen obviously. Today the first details about Razer Phone 2 have surfaced and once again they have to do with the Project Linda.

Sources are saying that the finalized Project Linda could be coming at IFA 2018, with the Razer Phone 2 generation. The name Razer Phone 2 is still pending and the sources claim that the debut will take place in September. The source doesn’t have specs, but they do have some interesting details. Project Linda and Razer Phone 2 may debut as a bundle.

For those of you not sure what Project Linda is, we’re talking about an Android laptop, a dock for the phone with some extras. It seems that this project is actually not 100% ready for prime time and the Razer execs will decide about over the next few days. CEO Min-Liang Tan replied to Marques Brownlee on Twitter recently suggesting that the device will happen.

Since Razer Phone is a gaming phone, we expect the second model to sport an even better CPU, probably the Snapdragon 845 and move on to even higher RAM and storage quantities. The Project Linda itself could be upgraded, with improved battery life, higher resolution, ergonomic and backlit keyboard, plus powerful speakers (even though the Razer Phone itself has powerful ones).

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

Tonight’s Video Worth Sharing: The Dell XPS 13 (2018) Notebook Full Review

By Tim

Tonight’s video comes to us from Andrew over at AMDTech and covers, in detail, the new Dell XPS 13 that was just released.

The new model is thinner and lighter than last year’s version and in the case of this review comes with a 4K display.

Of course that thinner, lighter stuff means less  space to cram stuff under the hood. So the battery is a bit smaller and gone is a full size SD card slot and also gone are the full size USB ports.

On the other hand we get 3 USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports and we at least get a USB-C to full size USB adapter dongle in the box.

We have an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor and 8 GB of RAM along with a relatively quick 256 GB SSD.

So all the above being said, check out the video, subscribe to Andrew’s channel if you like this tech stuff and want honest reviews.

That is all for now,

Tim

Samsung Notebook 7 Spin (2018) Carefully Details Special Features, in New Video

By Radu Iorga

Samsung Notebook 7 Spin (2018) was unveiled earlier this year at CES 2018, but you may have been left wanting more details about this rotatable machine. Samsung reveals extra tidbits in the video below, so let’s check it out.

The fresh clip details some of the device’s features, like the 10 point multi touch, side fingerprint scanner and more. This midrange notebook comes with Windows Hello, a 360 degree spin hinge and a generous battery. It’s shown interacting with a stylus and putting to work its 8th gen Intel quad core CPU. Windows Ink is also supported and the format looks rather versatile. I know you’ve been wondering, but here it is: yes, the keyboard is backlit.

This is a 13.3 inch laptop with a Full HD resolution, a multi touch display and it lets you use the trackpad or just a finger for interaction. The extended battery life comes courtesy of a 43 Wh battery, in tandem with a CPU that has great power management. Samsung also shows its new program called Studio Plus, which is basically a rival for Apple’s iMovie, meant for video editing and movie creation.

Security Folder is also available, as an extra security feature for the laptop. Expect its debut in Q1 2018, priced close to $800 like the predecessor, but that’s my own estimate, so don’t bet on it.
