iPad Mini 5 Teardown Shows Low Repairability, Components from Older iPads

By Radu Iorga

The iPad Mini 5 started shipping to customers over the past weekend and we’re expecting the first reviews to pop up any minute now. There should also be the occasional bend test and there’s already a teardown here, courtesy of iFixit. The device is proving very hard to repair, albeit not as hard as the AirPods 2, which have been deemed impossible to fix.

Turns out that the new iPad Mini isn’t exactly hugely different from its predecessor, since it looks pretty much the same. It also feels a bit like a small iPad Air and includes components from previous iPads. It’s been 4 years since the last iPad Mini and we thought a new one wouldn’t happen. The iFixit team has opened the machine to find inside a 19.32 Wh battery, which is the same capacity as the iPad Mini4 battery.

There’s also novelty, like the 7 megapixel F/2.2 camera, borrowed from the 10.5 inch iPad Pro. That’s quite the upgrade from the previous smaller iPad. Then we find the Apple A12 CPU inside, which still keeps the iPhone XS and XS Max on top of the benchmark lists. A new microphone array has been moved near the selfie cam and there are also new ambient light sensors that support the True Tone feature, adjusting the white balance of the screen based on the surrounding light.

The repairability score is 2 out of 10, because there’s a ton of adhesive, particularly for the battery part. Still, the good news is that you only need a single Philips screwdriver to pop up the screws. The battery replacement is very hard, there’s adhesive everywhere and removing the Home button is quite hard, in order to replace the screen. Adhesive also holds cables and parts into place, making things harder.

Apple iPad Mini 5 Unveiled: Apple A12 CPU, Same Format, Apple Pencil Support

By James A.

Apple’s latest hardware products are iPads, it seems. The Cupertino giant unveiled a new iPad Mini after 4 years of no successor and also an iPad Air 10.5 inch today. We’ve covered the iPad Air already and now let’s see the iPad Mini 5. The newcomer has been so long overdue, that it was considered basically cancelled at some point.

The iPad Mini 5 keeps the format of the predecessor, with an unibody metal shell and thick bezels. It’s got a powerful CPU this time, the Apple A12, from the iPhone XS Max and XS. Apple claims that the performance is 3 times greater than the predecessors and 9 times higher in the graphical department. The screen is expected to be 25% brighter than the iPad Mini 4 and it also offers True Tone tech.

Apple Pencil is supported as well, at least the first gen model. The screen is said to offer 500 nits of brightness and the full specs list looks like this:

  • Display: 7.9 inch, 2048 x 1536 pixels
  • Processor: Apple A12
  • Storage: 64 GB, 256 GB
  • Camera: 8 MP back, 7 MP front
  • Battery: 19.1 Wh
  • Connectivity: audio jack, Lightning, Bluetooth 5.0, 4G, WiFi ac
  • Others: Touch ID fingerprint scanner, stereo speakers

We don’t have info about the RAM quantity, but my guess is around 2 or 3 GB. The iPad Mini 5 is going to be priced at $399 and the preorders start today. You’ll find it in shops next week, in Silver, Gray and Rose Gold, starting at $399. The highest end 4G model with 256 GB of storage goes to $679.

iPad Air 10.5 inch 2019 Tablet Unveiled, With Apple A12 CPU

By James A.

Apple couldn’t wait till March 25 when it has a special event scheduled and debuted two new iPads today. One is the iPad Mini 5 and the other is the iPad Air 10.5 (2019) model. Both have an Apple A12 CPU inside and this piece focuses more on the bigger version. Let’s see what it has to offer.

This device is priced at $499 and up and it comes with a chassis that’s slimmer and lighter than the previous affordable iPads. It’s got the same Apple A12 CPU from the iPad Mini 5 and iPhone XS Max, by the way. The device uses an unibody metal case and keeps the Home button and fingerprint scanner. It packs a 10.5 inch True Tone display, plus it comes in gold, silver and space gray.

Apple also debuted a special Smart Keyboard accessory for the device, which is also compatible with a stylus. The product weighs 456 grams and measures 6.1 mm in thickness. It doesn’t have the rumored USB Type-C port, by the way, sticking with Lightning instead.

The screen on board is fully laminated and the full specs of the machine go like this:

  • Display: 10.5 inch, LED, 2224 x 1668 pixels, 500 nits
  • CPU: Apple A12
  • Storage: 64 GB, 256 GB
  • Battery: 30.2 Whr, 10 hours of usage
  • Camera: 8 MP back, 7 MP front
  • Connectivity: WiFi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, 4G
  • Others: Touch ID, stereo speakers, audio jack

The 64 GB version of the device is priced at $499 and the highest priced model is the 4G 256 GB one, at $779. The Smart Keyboard is $159 and the Apple Pencil first gen is compatible with this slate, at $99. The new iPad Air is already up for preorder and reaches shops next week.

iPhone X Fold Proposes New Approach for Apple Foldable Phone

By Radu Iorga

A few days ago we saw a bunch of renders showing off various versions of foldable iPhones in patents. Those inspired a few renders and concepts, but not hugely convincing ones. A new render appears today, clearly inspired by the Galaxy Fold. Meet the iPhone X Fold below.

The device has some elegance about it and very discrete hinge. It’s well disguised and from what I can see the screen seemed layered on a flexible skeleton. From what I can see the device is all screen, tow two screens inside and at least one outside, maybe even two, for a total of 4 screens. When totally opened the hinge becomes invisible and there’s no seam or crease.

The way the device looks when folded reminds me of an older Nokia Communicator, or a smaller Sony Vaio. If this device really happens, that should go down in 2020, according to insiders. The iPhone X Fold has a 1:3 aspect ratio for the external screen, while the inner screen has a 2:3 aspect. Just for the sake of accuracy, this concept was designed by Roy Gilsing for Foldable.News.

The landscape view of the device triggers a very convincing virtual keyboard and there’s that Sony Vaio comparison again… It feels like a mini notebook with a hole cutout for the camera. We don’t have a diagonal size here, but I’m guessing 7 inches is the way to for the unfolded machine.

Foldable iPhone Gets a New Concept, Is Now a Clamshell

By Radu Iorga

Today is all about Samsung and its foldable phone, plus the Galaxy S10, but we still find time for some love for Apple. Letsgodigital.org came up with a render for the future foldable iPhone, taking the clamshell route.

The renders follow the recently leaked patents for the device, that proposed a variety of formats. We see the device looking like some proto Moto RAZR 2019, with minimal edges and thickness. The foldable Apple phone is going to debut in 2020, according to the latest leaks and speculations. The main problem I have with this design is that it feels and looks very fragile.

It feels like it’s a broken phone and wouldn’t flex without hurting components. It’s either using an incredibly flexible screen and parts, or it’s just wishful thinking. The source of the design, Letsgodigital claims that the device can be folded in and out. One reason for the way this device looks is the simplicity of the Apple patents, shown as basic outlines, something they’ve always done.

The reason for having a vertical and elongated phone is that you can easily operate it with a single hand. It’s actually surprising that the phone can bend in two directions.. Folding it in makes it a square and it you bend it backwards it enters a stand position. The cameras are positioned at the top part of the case and in this case we see a single front camera upfront and dual camera at the back.

The handset has very narrow bezels, at the top, bottom and sides. I feel that the UI would also have to be changed to fit the new design approach. We need some new materials before this can happen.
