Dragon Touch X10 Update to Android 5.1.1 was a Success!

Screenshot from MY Dragon X10

So tonight’s project was to update the DTX10 to Android 5.1.1 and the update went great and all has been returned to functional, including the server,  on the tablet.

At first glance, no one would know that the system was updated. But it is a bit different in how the menus work and the dropdown for the notifications and settings are now in the center.

Overall I would rate this as a worthwhile update, but it does have one minor glitch that probably won’t affect 99% of those using this tablet. But…the glitch involves the MAC address changing after every restart. No big deal for most people, but I am used to reserved IP addresses on my router and those are based on the MAC address of the device. That means extra work every time I either reboot or turn the tablet off.

Other than that and since very few folks will ever run a server on their tablet, the glitch is simply a non-issue. So if you have one of the older versions with Android 4.4.4, go ahead and do the upgrade!

The real irony here is that my flagship Asus Z580CA is still on Android 5.0. That is indeed a sad commentary on a company that used to value customer support.

Here is the link to get the Tool and update file needed to do the update. Click for the files.

Before you run this update, watch this video at least twice before running the update! It isn’t difficult, but it sure pays to know what you are going to do before you start! Not all the info is up to date, get the latest version when downloading.  (X10-HT-PW-V2-AL-5.1-20150115)

So my WiFi Keep Alive Issues With Android 5 Might Be Cured on 2 of My Devices…Maybe.

A wireless mouse fixes the WiFi sleep issue?
A wireless mouse fixes the WiFi sleep issue?

Both my BLU Studio Energy 2 smartphone and Asus Z580CA Tablet are running Android 5.0 (I know, why?), but they both have similar issues to my Dragon Touch X10 Tablet with Android 4.4.4 Kit-Kat in that they die  WiFi-wise when the display goes to sleep.

I have tried every combination in the book until tonite, where I found that if I turn off the data connection (cell), on the BLU Studio Energy2 and set the WiFi to never sleep, it actually appears to never sleep!

Now in the case of the Asus Z580CA Tablet, which is for sale incidentally, but that is neither here nor there, the cure was a complete surprise. No matter what I did with the settings the damned WiFi would go into dreamland shortly after the display shut down, even when plugged in.

However, after playing about with my wireless mouse attached with the super nifty USB C-Full USB adapter, the tablet appears to remain awake. Considering the fact that I am writing this on my PC and posting it on the Asus Tablet right now, which has been “asleep” for roughly 10 minutes, I believe that I have reached a viable alternative to leaving the screen on at minimum brightness.

This however is no excuse for an operating system to have a setting that is labeled “always on” and yet does not work in more than a few cases.

But it does show that if you test enough, you WILL find a workaround, not necessarily the obvious one, but one you might never expect.

I have yet to test this out on the Dragon Touch X10, since it to can use a wireless mouse as well and usually has one attached (when in use as my LogiTab), but I am still hoping for that elusive Android 5.1 upgrade.

It’s Saturday and Time for the Dragon Touch X10 Report Again! This week, Tablets,Virtual Machines and Windows 10.

Chuwi_Hibook1-300x300So if you are a regular visitor to this site you probably know that I run a server on the Dragon Touch X10 tablet and it works just great. However when I use the Dragon Touch for it’s real purpose which is editing my web sites and posting articles such as this I hand over the server duties to my Asus Z580CA.

Now of course the Asus tablet is absolutely stellar performance wise, but it is considerably smaller in screen dimension than the Dragon Touch X10, so I have decided to sell it after only 2 months.

The reasons are simple, I like to experiment and I really want to try running the tablet server from a Windows 10 machine. So as I posted about just a few days ago, I am  satisfied that I can do this since I tested the concept on my Asus X553SA notebook which has 4gb ram and Windows 10.

So what I have pretty much decided on is a dual-boot Chuwi HiBook, with a 10.1 inch screen and 1920 x 1200 screen resolution and 4gb ram. The price is great and the bonus is having 2 operating systems with Win 10 or Android 5.1.

The Dragon Touch X10 isn’t going anywhere. But the new tablet should certainly be an interesting experiment.

What amounts to ‘Proof of Concept’ for the New Tablet I am Considering! Win 10 on a dual-core Notebook running a VM in Linux!

VM is working great!
VM is working great!

So once again this evening I did a bit more testing using my Asus X553SA Notebook to see how well Windows 10 with a VMware server, running on Linux Debian would work.

There were a few minor glitches, such as having to install the php5-gd library and Imagemagick so I could edit images inside WordPress and crop headers, etc.

However all seems well at this time as I write this directly to the Asus notebook based server.

Below is a short video I recorded using my BLU Studio Energy2 phone via screen capture.

So someone buy my Asus Z580CA so I can test this all out on a nice Windows 10 Tablet!

The video below is for those who never visit the Tablet Test site, because by the morning this site will be back in the Dragon Touch X10.
