Archos Mate is a New Series of Connected Speakers With Displays, Amazon Alexa

By Radu Iorga

Ever since the Amazon Echo Show and the Google Smart Displays platform, we’ve been seeing more and more smart speakers with screens integrated. The latest such product is the Archos Mate, which includes two versions, that will arrive this fall.

There’s a 5 inch model with a portrait orientation and a 7 inch one with a landscape screen. The devices start from $99 and will be available this October. Both have AI support, Amazon Alexa features and can perform video calls, as well as show your favourite clips. They can hook up to smart home devices, show reminders and news, plus respond to a slew of vocal commands.

Calendar integration, weather, recipes, shopping lists are all available here, plus timers and alerts. The Archos Mate products were designed by the Archos design team from Paris and they come in elegant designs. One feels like an old school stereo, the other like a fixed phone, if you sk me. Vocal recognition and high end microphones and speakers are on board.

There’s also a HD screen, quad core CPU, Bluetooth and WiFi. A 5 MP camera, two mics and a 1500 or 3000 mAh battery are here. I can see these devices being used in the kitchen for a proper cookout with a video guide. Expect them on the market in October.

GPD Pocket 2 Mini Laptop Will Feature a Narrower Bezel, Slimmer Body and Faster CPU

By Radu Iorga

We have fresh info about one of those famed mini laptop slash gaming consoles, that’s becoming more and more popular. It’s the GPD Pocket 2 and it’s a device that will be much slimmer than the predecessor. Liliputing has the scoop on it and we dissect their findings below.

GPD launched a small Windows 10 laptop PC last year, going by the name of GPD Pocket. It packed a 7 inch touchscreen display, an Intel Atom x7-Z8750 Cherry Trail CPU and an impressive 8 GB of RAM. It also has 128 GB of eMMC storage and it’s priced at around $480 right now. The second gen unit is almost here, according to the latest info. GPD’s co-owner is the one who posted the info, showing pictures and specs of the machine.

It seems to be keeping the 7 inch touchscreen display, but this time it has smaller left and right bezels. The front of the laptop also becomes slimmer, measuring just 8.5 mm, but there are still ports on the left and right side. The original Pocket only had ports on one side. Connectivity is rather generous here, with two USB Type-A ports, one USB Type-C and a microSD card slot.

There’s also an audio jack in the mix. GPD cofounder Wade has been discussing specs and it seems that we’re going to get a Full HD resolution, an Intel Core M3 processor and 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM. There’s also 128 GB of eMMC storage, a microSD card slot and a 6800 mAh battery. Interestingly, a capacitive pen also made its way into the equation. The price is said to be lower than the one of the GPD Win 2, which sold for $599 – $649 during a recent crowdfunding campaign.

Panasonic Intros Fully Rugged Tablet, With Intel RealSense 3D Camera: ToughPad FZ-M1

By Radu Iorga

I know the name Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 may sound familiar to you, but apparently there’s a new version of the tablet out there. To be honest, I knew this device as a rugged model with Windows 8, but now it pops up again, in a new version with Intel RealSense 3D Camera.

The camera system is perfect for accurate 3D measurement for industry applications. Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 is a rugged tablet meant to process 3D dimensions on the go. The solution was unveiled at the Hannover Messe in Germany and it’s great for warehouse space optimization, plant and asset maintenance.

Monitoring in healthcare and crime scene, as well as insurance claim are all fields where the product could be used. This 7 inch slate uses a D410 camera, runs Windows and lets field workers take and process 3D measurements on the spot. Similar solutions are used by healthcare pros to measure the healing of wounds and bed ulcers. This approach is quite widespread and used by nurses and doctors.

The same device can be used to measure cracks in bridges or buildings, accurately and without having to climb ladders. The Intel RealSense camera has a use range from 16 cm up to 10 m, depending on the environment. The tablet can be configured with a variety of options, like barcode scanner, thermal camera, wired LAN, rugged LAN and serial port, as well as USB 2.0.

The tablet runs Windows 10 Pro in this version and uses a 6th gen Intel Core processors. The battery life is about 9 hours, but there’s also a 20 hour option available. The price is $2497.

7 inch Samsung Tablet Gets Certified by WiFi Alliance, Has Android 8.0 Oreo on Board

By James A.

It’s been a while since we last covered a smaller tablet, but here we are again, this time with a 7 inch Samsung device, that just got certified by the WiFi Alliance. It’s codenamed Samsung SM-T230NZ and it showed up in the official registry, with Android 8.0 Oreo in tow.

This is a 7 inch Android slate, which is pretty mysterious, since its model number doesn’t seem to point to any series. Samsung has a 7 inch tablet on the market already with the codename Samsung SM-T230, which is the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0, that debuted in March 2016. The “NZ” particle is a bit small to signify a totally new device. The predecessor Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 also had the same model number, so things are tricky.

It could end up being the same Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0, but one that has received Oreo and has been tested to see if it works. It’s weird to see it certified by the WiFi Alliance and FCC, feeling a bit overkill for an already existing device. The sketches of the unit show a differently designed machine though, compared to the current Galaxy Tab A 7.0. The design features of the newer Sammy tablets are here, including LED flash for the back camera and replaced speaker.

There’s no specs to comment on, but the previous Galaxy Tab A 7.0 had a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, a 1.5 GHz quad core CPU and 1.5 GB of RAM, as well as a 2 MP front camera and 5 MP back shooter. The battery life was excellent, rated at 10 hours.

Amazon Debuts Gold Version of Kindle Oasis Reader

By Radu Iorga

Amazon launched this week a new version of the Kindle Oasis reader, available in gold, but without the cellular connectivity. It’s been five months since the device’s debut and now the second color option is here.

Kindle Oasis is available in champagne gold, but it keeps the dark gray hue upfront. It’s meant to make the text pop up, while the back side is covered in “pale gold” and it’s made of aluminum. Kindle Oasis obviously keeps the specs, including 7 inch 300 ppi display and this time there’s no 8 GB of storage or cellular connection, like the OG Oasis had.

The gold unit offers 32 GB WiFi only, that’s the only setup. It’s priced at $280 with ads and $300 without. Interestingly enough, Kindle Fire tablets have been available in the brightest of colors, but somehow the e-readers have only come in black or white somehow. Of course there’s also the slightly gray Oasis, but let’s agree to call it black.

The latest version available is the Kindle Oasis 2 (2017), with waterproofing and Audible support. There’s Bluetooth here, which lets you connect to Bluetooth supporting headphones or speakers and react as a companion for audio books with a few taps. The resolution is 1680 x 1264 pixels and the asymmetric design is here to stay, for better grip.
