Amazon Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Get 2018 Versions; Here Are the Prices

By Radu Iorga

Amazon refreshed its lineup of Fire HD tablets this week, by launching 2018 editions of the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 8 Kids Edition tablets. The company already refreshed the Fire HD 10 inch model for kids a few months ago and now it’s turn for these 8 inch models. They come with hands free Alexa support and we detail them below.

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2018) and Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition (2018) are very similar to the predecessors, actually identical if I’m being honest. They also have the same quad core 1.3 GHz processors and 1.5 GB of RAM. The clearest upgrade is the move to a 2 MP front camera, that replaces the VGA shooter from the previous gen models. The main camera is still a 2 MP shooter.

Alexa is available as an “always ready” feature for the standard Fire HD 8, always waiting to be summoned for playback control, music streaming, or even reading an Audible book to you. It can also launch an app without you being required to use your hands. The battery life is estimated at around 10 hours of mixed use, which is pretty solid for me.

There’s also a Show Mode, which turns the tablet into an Amazon Echo Show of sorts, a speaker with a screen basically. Another appealing point here is the set of Dolby Atmos stereo speakers, plus dual band WiFi and a microSD card slot is also in the mix. 16 GB or 32 GB of storage are here. The “All New Fire HD 8 Tablet” is priced at $79.99 with 16 GB of storage and it ships around October 4th.

Meanwhile the all new Kids Edition model has a kid proofed case and it’s priced at $129.99 in a single version with 32 GB of storage. It also has a FreeTime Unlimited access for a year and a 24 month guarantee that Amazon replaces the device if the child breaks, no questions asked. The same stereo audio and 10 hours of battery life are here.

Amazon Fire 7 Kids Edition Tablets Now Discounted Till August 25th; Here’s the New Price

By James A.

Even though it’s not time for a Black Friday or any sort of special celebration, Amazon has decided to discount the Fire 7 Kids Edition tablets, for a limited time only. Amazon Fire 7 Kids Edition is now priced at just $79.99 down from $99.99 from now till August 25th.

This is meant as a companion device for the little ones, offering access to content, games and services tailor made for the kids. There’s content from Nickelodeon, PBS and Disney, plus much more. And since the young ones tend to move around a lot and also break stuff, the device packs a tough protective case, making it harder for kids to put a dent in the slate’s case or screen.

As far as specs go, the Amazon Fire 7 Kids Edition packs a 7 inch screen, 16 GB of storage and a variety of color choices. There’s blue, yellow and pink among them. The product is available with 2 year of worry free guarantee and 1 year of Fire for Kids Unlimited and a bundled Kid Proof Case. A welcome feature is the microSD card slot, that lets you expand storage.

The 7 inch screen is an IPS and offers HD resolution, while the battery life sits at about 8 hours. A quad core CPU clocked at 1.3 GHz should be enough for the most basic of tasks, Netflix included. By the way, there’s also a VGA front camera and a 2 MP rear shooter and dual band WiFi. You can get the device here discounted.

Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition Launched, Up for Preorder Right Now and Shipping Next Month

By Radu Iorga

Amazon debuted the Fire HD 10 Kids Edition device today and also made it available for preorder. It ships next month and also debuting with it is the “Show Mode”, that allows you to experience Alexa on a full screen view.

Back to the product for the little ones, the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids edition is very much like the 7 inch and 8 inch Kids edition slates. Specs wise it’s more of the same with the Fire HD 10 tablet launched in 2017, except for a few features. It has a colorful case, that has been kid proofed, plus a two year warranty and a year of FreeTime Unlimited.

That service gives the children unlimited access to shows, books, games and so forth. It also comes with a solid set of Parental Controls, including timers and access blockers. This Kid Edition is priced $50 higher than the regular Fire HD 10, so basically you will end up paying $200 for it. The preorders taken now will ship around July 11th.

The Amazon Freetime Unlimited is available for free for 2 years. It also offers a Bedtime feature, 32 GB of storage, a microSD card slot and a 10.1 inch Full HD screen. A good piece of news is that the worry free guarantee will let you replace the device for free if it breaks, no questions asked. A kid friendly browser has also been included.

Amazon’s Fire Tablets Are Now Becoming Echo Devices Through a New Feature/Update

By Radu Iorga

Amazon has done some nifty feature bumping for its Fire tablets this week, by introducing a feature on the devices, which turns a Fire tablet into an Echo device. The Bezos-ran giant recently showcased Alexa on Fire tablets, with a special “Show Mode” and a new charging dock.

Amazon wants to push Alexa further and put it at the forefront of the slate experience. This new Show Mode feature has appeared on the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 tablets. It’s supposed to offer an immersive hands free Alexa experience. Show Mode makes the Fire tablet into a full screen mode, which lets Alexa serve up visual responses, aside from the audio based answers.

Thus, Alexa can be asked for news, weather, calendar events and more. Alexa is already four year old, being available on Amazon Echo speakers in 2014. The company launched some Echo branded speakers over the past years and they became so popular that they even made it to the “Mr. Robot” TV show as some sort of character, if we can call it that. It was pretty late to arrive on tablets, hitting Fire devices back in 2016.

Another late arrival is the fact that the Fire HD 10 inaugurated the hands free experience on a slate last year. The Fire 8 and Fire HD 8 got the similar feature a bunch of months ago, albeit with some limitations. This new update should be available over the air from July 2nd. Basically, all the compatible Amazon tablets instantly become Echo Show devices or alternatives of it.

Amazon also debuted a new accessory, the “Show Mode Charging Dock”, which switches the Fire tablet into a full screen Alexa mode when it’s hooked up. It also provides wireless charging to the Fire Tablet, ditching a few cables. From what I can see the dock is ideal to put the tablet at about a 45 degree angle. The dock costs $40 for the Fire HD 8 tablet and the one for Fire HD 10 is priced at $55.
