Amazon confirms that Echo device secretly shared user’s private audio

By Sam Machkovech

Amazon confirmed an Echo owner’s privacy-sensitive allegation on Thursday, after Seattle CBS affiliate KIRO-7 reported that an Echo device in Oregon sent private audio to someone on a user’s contact list without permission.

“Unplug your Alexa devices right now,” the user, Danielle (no last name given), was told by her husband’s colleague in Seattle after he received full audio recordings between her and her husband, according to the KIRO-7 report. The disturbed owner, who is shown in the report juggling four unplugged Echo Dot devices, said that the colleague then sent the offending audio to Danielle and her husband to confirm the paranoid-sounding allegation. (Before sending the audio, the colleague confirmed that the couple had been talking about hardwood floors.)

After calling Amazon customer service, Danielle said she received the following explanation and response: “‘Our engineers went through all of your logs. They saw exactly what you told us, exactly what you said happened, and we’re sorry.’ He apologized like 15 times in a matter of 30 minutes. ‘This is something we need to fix.'”

Amazon Debuts Gold Version of Kindle Oasis Reader

By Radu Iorga

Amazon launched this week a new version of the Kindle Oasis reader, available in gold, but without the cellular connectivity. It’s been five months since the device’s debut and now the second color option is here.

Kindle Oasis is available in champagne gold, but it keeps the dark gray hue upfront. It’s meant to make the text pop up, while the back side is covered in “pale gold” and it’s made of aluminum. Kindle Oasis obviously keeps the specs, including 7 inch 300 ppi display and this time there’s no 8 GB of storage or cellular connection, like the OG Oasis had.

The gold unit offers 32 GB WiFi only, that’s the only setup. It’s priced at $280 with ads and $300 without. Interestingly enough, Kindle Fire tablets have been available in the brightest of colors, but somehow the e-readers have only come in black or white somehow. Of course there’s also the slightly gray Oasis, but let’s agree to call it black.

The latest version available is the Kindle Oasis 2 (2017), with waterproofing and Audible support. There’s Bluetooth here, which lets you connect to Bluetooth supporting headphones or speakers and react as a companion for audio books with a few taps. The resolution is 1680 x 1264 pixels and the asymmetric design is here to stay, for better grip.

Apple Leads Worldwide Tablet Market in Shipments in Q4 2017; Amazon Beats Samsung

By Radu Iorga

The latest figures are in, concerning the tablet market and other such developments. Turns out that Apple finished first in worldwide shipments in Q4 2017 and Amazon stunningly beat Samsung to second place.

The Apple iPad was once again the most shipped tablet in the world during the last 3 months of 2017. From October to December the Cupertino giant shipped 13.2 million slates, which is up 0.6% from the 13.1 million shipped in the same time frame in 2016.

That’s how Apple managed to capture 26.6% market share, all thanks to the cheaper iPad and the latest iPad Pro model. Things area about to get better, as the year 2018 is expected to bring an iPad Pro with an edge to edge OLED screen and maybe even a Face ID notch.

Back to the tablets top sellers, we usually see Samsung in second place, this time usurped by Amazon, who took on that spot. Samsung is now placed third, while Amazon benefited a lot from outfitting its devices with Alexa. They shipped 7.7 million tablets in the quarter, a 50.3% bump from Q4 2016’s 5.2 million.

Now they have a market share of 15.6%, up from 9.6%. Samsung did grow in detachables, but not in the rest of sub segmetns, Huawei is placed fourth with 3.5 million units shipped and 7.1% market share. Lenovo ends up fifth. A total of 49.6 million tablets were shipped from October to December 2017, which is down 7.9% from the year before.
