CES 2019: Huawei Introduces MateBook 13 Laptop and MediaPad M5 Lite Tablet

By James A.

Huawei was present at CES 2019, but no phones were seen. Instead they brought on a tablet and laptop: MediaPad M5 Lite and Huawei MateBook 13. The slate was already showcased internationally, but it only now reaches USA, while the laptop is pretty much a MacBook Air rival.

Huawei MateBook 13 is a 2.86 pound laptop with a 13 inch screen that offers a 2160 x 1440 pixel resolution. It’s a slim laptop with a large trackpad and a keyboard that can take a few spills. It has a starting price of $999 and inside we find an 8th gen Intel Core i5-8265U processor (Whiskey Lake), as well as 256 GB of storage and integrated graphics.

There’s also a Core i7-8565U version with 512 GB of storage and also adding an NVIDIA GeForce MX150 GPU, priced at $1299. Both versions have 8 GB of RAM and a battery that should offer around 10 hours of video playback. There’s also a fingerprint reader here within the Power button.

Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite is a new tablet from Huawei, well not exactly new, but new in USA, where it hasn’t been available. It’s got a 10.1 inch screen, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, plus a starting price of $299. There’s an USB Type-C port on board, plus an audio jack and there are 4 speakers in the mix with Harman Kardon certification.

Specs include a Kirin 659 CPU, a 7500 mAh battery and Huawei promises 13 hours of video playback time.

CES 2019: Samsung Showcases Foldable Phone to Las Vegas Customers

By Radu Iorga

Samsung’s foldable phone was first partially shown at SDC 2018 late last year and now it’s back in a more detailed form. Samsung Electronics showcased its foldable machine at the CES 2019 booth for customers to see.

We expected CES to be about foldables, but aside from Samsung and Royole, I haven’t seen too much action. Right now Samsung is finishing up optimization processes for the foldable hardware and software. When unfolded, the machine doesn’t show any crease to indicate it has been bent. It seems that completely folding the device results in breakage, so more testing and upgrades are needed.

I should highlight the word “customers” here, because Samsung only showed the foldable to them at CES, not regular visitors. It means they showed it to retailers, carriers and potential partners. The display on the foldable is thinner when fully opened. When folded, the device provides a stable grip, instead of feeling thick.

Samsung intends to launch its foldable phone in the first half of the year and initially it will produce around 1 million units, less than the 10 million units quota for the Galayx S. Those who played with the device claim that it’s ideal for multitasking and great for someone who wants both a smartphone and tablet. The target audience is men in their 40s, familiar with “folder phones” launched in late 1990s.

Royole FlexPai is also a pretty solid foldable shown at CES 2019.

CES 2019: FlexPai, World’s First Real Foldable Phone Gets Showcased in Las Vegas

By Radu Iorga

In November last year, out of nowhere came the news that a Snapdragon 855 phone had been launched. It was also a foldable phone and it didn’t look half bad. It was dubbed FlexPai and came from the company Royole. Now Engadget was present at CES 2019 and took it for a spin there.

It took a while for the product to reach North America and it still feels very much like a prototype, to be honest. In spite of that the device is already up for purchase. The folding action seems a bit rigid, but I suspect that after a few uses it’ll become more natural. Royole has been working on flexible screens since 2012, so they’re not exactly new in the field.

The FlexPai has a Snapdragon 855 CPU and it’s actually the first comercially available device with this chipset. It’s got 6 or 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB or 256 GB of storage and a dual 16 MP + 20 MP back camera. It runs an Android 9.0 Pie special version, that’s tweaked to trigger a tablet mode. The Engadget editor seemed genuinely impressed by how seamless the passage from phone to tablet is.

There’s a 7.8 inch AMOLED screen here, one that folds in half to turn into a smartphone, which to be honest is not very easy to wield. The hinge looks rather massive and feels a bit like the Surface Book or Lenovo Yoga Book hinge. The cameras on the device were poor on the prototype, it seems. So, yes, it needs a bit of work, but this can motivate rivals to go much further.

CES 2019: Samsung Debuts Notebook 9 Pro, a Premium Convertible Laptop + Notebook Flash Budget Model

By James A.

Samsung brought a bunch of new laptops at CES 2019, including a budget offering dubbed Notebook Flash, plus the premium model Samsung Notebook 9 Pro. That one is a premium convertible and both are detailed below.

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro is a 13.3 inch screen machine, with a convertible format and a full metal design. Inside there’s an Intel Whiskey Lake processor and the laptop packs a touchscreen display and a 360 degree hinge. Sammy put on it stereo 1.5 watt speakers, a backlit keyboard and an Intel Core i7-8565U CPU, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of PCIe NVMe SSD.

A 55 Wh battery also makes the cut, plus a bundled pen with over 4000 levels of pressure sensitivity. There’s no shortage of connectivity options, like two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one extra USB Type-C port and an audio jack. To that we add a microSD card slot and the obvious WiFi and Bluetooth. It all weighs 2.84 pounds.

Then comes the plastic and Intel Gemini Lake totting model Samsung Notebook Flash. There’s a 13.3 inch screen on board, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of eMMC storage. It weighs around 3 pounds and measures 0.67 inches in thickness. There’s a Full HD resolution here, a fingerprint sensor and CPU options are Intel Celeron N4000 and Pentium Silver N5000. The round buttons below remind me of Google’s Pixel Slate keyboard.

Connectivity is the following: two USB Type-C ports, an USB 2.0 port, HDMI, audio jack and WiFi ac. There’s also microSD and a 39 Wh battery. Sadly there are no prices or launch dates for either model yet. Both run Windows 10 Home.
