The HiBook News: This Edition, Still Searching For The Perfect Notebook

By Tim

As folks may have noticed I am really looking into getting another notebook. I have covered quite a few of them on here in recent posts and videos. However I am sort of beginning to  narrow my list down.

Price is of course a big concern, but so is RAM and a decent display. I am currently leaning towards a 13.3 or 14.1 inch notebook and my minimums are not all that restrictive since quite a few have made my “A” list.

My minimum specs are as follows:

  • 13.3 inch or larger Full HD 1080p display
  • An Intel Celeron N3450 processor
  • 6 GB RAM
  • SSD storage availability is a must
  • Good battery life is a must
  • Dual Band Wireless 802.11b/g/n/ac
  • Plenty of ports for a mouse/microSD and HDMI out

Those specs have eliminated a few devices from my list already such as the Chuwi LapBook 12.3. There simply is no point in getting a 12.3 inch notebook when the Hi12 is a mere 3 tenths of an inch smaller and has a great display and works well as a notebook when used with my Logitech K480 Bluetooth keyboard.

I have also eliminated the Chuwi SurBook 2 in 1 device because it isn’t any bigger than the LapBook 12.3 and is does not have SSD expansion capabilities.

That of course has me down to the following notebooks:

  • The Chuwi LapBook 14.1, which meets almost all the requirements and is dirt cheap. It does lack the 6 GB RAM but 4 GB is probably more than I really need. I did a comparison post between this one and the LapBook 12.3 a few weeks back.
  • The Jumper EZBook 3 Pro which is priced very reasonably and has the 6 GB RAM.  It has all the requirements I listed above and has done well in reviews!
  • Last on my current list is the new Chuwi LapBook Air which has some killer specs with the 8 GB RAM and a fully laminated screen. However this one is only a want until I see some reviews on it. At this point we don’t know how it actually performs when it comes to the display and battery life.

Now by no means are the notebooks that I eliminated not good they are both  great, but for me they just don’t fit into what I need for work and they simply are not big enough to justify me spending the money on.

So that is the current list and where I am at right now, unless some kind soul would like to donate a small bundle of cash so I can get a few into my hands for serious testing. Or if folks actually clicked the ads and links here and bought a few of these items, that would help tremendously.

That is all I have for now. As usual this post was written on the Hi12 while the HiBook is the server today.

Finally We Have Some Pricing AND Specs On The Chuwi LapBook Air Notebook!

By Tim

The LapBook Air

Today Chuwi’s web site reflected that the LapBook Air would soon be released and you can sign up to either win one or get a $50 coupon off the initial sales price of $429.99.  That sales price, is pretty low considering the specs! The $50 coupon would really make this an appealing notebook for many folks at $379! (which by the way, was below my guess back when they were asking folks to guess the price)

Of course I had to look around for the specs and found them listed on both Gearbest and Amazon. Based on what I have read on those 2 sites here is what we are looking at spec-wise.

  • Intel Apollo Lake N3450 CPU
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 128 GB eMMC onboard storage
  • Easy to access slot on bottom to add an M2 2242 SSD
  • 1920 x 1080 fully laminated display
  • Back-lit Keyboard
  • 2 Full size USB 3.0 ports
  • a microSD card slot
  • HDMI port
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • Dual Band Wireless 802.11b/g/n/ac
  • Battery is 10000 mAh

Those are the things I know for sure. How it performs, how good the display looks and how the battery life is I will leave up to Andrew and Chris, the two reviewers that I follow and trust.

One more thing I do know, Amazon has stated the LapBook Air will be available on Oct 10th!

And now, more images…

That is all I have at this time,

Tim

Chuwi LapBook Air Now Officially Up for Preorder, at $429

By Radu Iorga

We wrote about the Chuwi LapBook Air ever since it was just a teaser and a set of renders and now it’s ready for prime time. Shown at IFA 2017, the device is now up for preorder at $429 or 429 euro, depending on where you live.

You can preorder the device here and it’s also supposed to get a special initial discount, of $50 via coupon. This takes the price down to $379. A special giveaway will also be active from September 20th. The Chuwi LapBook Air is promoted as a MacBook-style device, with a 1.3 kilogram weight and just 6 mm thickness.

It’s got a 14.1 inch IPS fully laminated screen with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and high brightness. It also brings a matte texture and relies on OGS tech for a whole piece bezel less glass panel upfront. The keyboard has its own backlighting and specs include an Apollo Lake N3450 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD storage.

Windows 10 is the OS of choice and the battery capacity is 33.7 Wh. Dual band WiFi also makes the cut, as well as dual mic noise reduction tech and stereo speakers. A fully specced machine I’d say, for a not bad price, not bad at all.

Today’s Video Worth Sharing: Full Review of The Chuwi SurBook 12.3 Inch 2 In 1 Tablet PC

By Tim

Today’s video covers the full review of the Chuwi SurBook 2 in 1 Windows Tablet PC. It comes to us from Chris over at TechTablets. This device sports a 2736 x 1824 screen resolution which is the same as a Surface Book. This is an IGZO display.

Also included we have either 128 GB or 64 GB of onboard eMMC storage, an Intel Celeron N3450 Apollo Lake CPU, 6 GB of RAM and 2 Full Size USB 3.0 ports and a USB-C 3.1 port.

There is also a microSD card slot in the mix and an optional back-lit keyboard and a stylus. This is a pretty decent device although it has a hefty price tag but is obviously far less expensive than a Microsoft Surface Book.

This one isn’t on my list because of the storage limitations. I would have preferred to see an SSD slot on this device so upgrading storage would be easily available.

So all that being said, let us proceed to the video!

This device is currently available at Banggood for $429.99.

That is all for now,

Tim

The Basic Premise Of THE TABLET SERVER Is Relatively Simple, But In Case You Missed it Please Read This!

By Tim

The Original Tablet Server

The tablet server web site has been around since August of 2014 in one form or another and occupying a few different domains. It has been moved and shifted and adjusted to meet the demands of traffic and also to allow for easy access.

We have changed the name over the years from a freebie dynamic domain name from ChangeIP .com to a full fledged “real” domain name. One thing that has never changed here is the desire to prove that a tablet can be a viable web server and that notebooks and laptops can do the same! (and yes, we have even run it on a smartphone a few times!)

Considering the fact that this site has run on an Asus Memo Pad HD7,  then an Asus ME572C, (which was incredible), and a Dragon Touch X10 and an Asus Z580CA to start with, I think our point has been proven. Since late 2015/early 2016 we have been on a HiBook Chuwi tablet or a Chuwi Hi12. Sure we have even run the site off an Asus X553SA notebook and it worked great!

We have been on Android, and Windows 7, using a Linux VM and currently Windows 10 with a Linux VM. (Yes, Linux makes a superior and far more cross device system than Windows itself).

I mentioned in a post a few years back that if you had a cable connection you could easily run your own web server. These days, with the faster connection speeds and the fact we have tablets like the Hi12, that I have let run for 22+ hrs as the server, there is no need to purchase expensive hardware or pay expensive hosting fees.

You can run your own back-ups and if needed rebuild your small business server in literally an hour or so if it gets broken, which does happen. All it takes is half a brain and the willingness to think outside the box.

You might be wondering where all this is going and now we get to the meat of this post. That is the simple fact that you need only look for one thing when buying a new tablet/notebook or even a smartphone and that is to decide which will get the job that YOU need done without issues!

Don’t be fooled by the thinner is better crowd, nor the metal is premium jabber. Yeah, those all sound good, but how many of you have a metal dashboard in your car? Let that sink in, the answer is, unless you belong to the metal and heavier and more power is better crowd, well then the answer is none!

Do you buy the latest fashions? I certainly hope not, because do not blue jeans and a t-shirt work as well as a Brooks Brothers suit? Yeah it is sort of like that, do not be a sheep, do not buy what the media describes as bleeding edge, just read, watch, learn and then decide what gets the job done.

I will never recommend anything that the average Joe can’t afford and I will never, ever, tell you something is worth buying without either thorough researching or having owned said product myself (and usually having tried to kill it).

That is all I have on a Monday,

Tim
