New Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Priced at $130, Available With 6 Months of Free Reading

By Radu Iorga

It’s getting pretty cold outside, so it’s probably time to stay in bed and read a good book. It may also help that Amazon launched a new version of the Kindle Paperwhite, priced at $130 and coming with 6 months of unlimited reading.

The previous Paperwhite was a big hit and Amazon want to capitalize on it. The new version fixes some of the issues of the predecessor and makes it smoother, so the screen isn’t below the outer bezel anymore. Amazon also added an extra LED to the built in light system, for a total of 5 LEDs, that will aid your reading. The product is water resistant, so hurray for bath tub reading.

The first Paperwhite had 4 GB of on board storage, but the new version has 8 GB of storage and an option to upgrade o 32 GB, for an extra price. The screen size stays at 6 inches and the pixel density is 300 ppi. Bluetooth is also here and you can use Audible to listen to your fave audio books. Amazon also added Audible Originals as a means of getting a better experience.

The best part of the experience is the 6 month subscription to Kindle Unlimited, which is usually $30 separately. This service gives you access to a million books for zero pay thanks to the offer. After the trial expires you will pay $9.99 to keep the service. Amazon is going to update the Paperwhite home screen and also add personalization settings. The price of the new Kindle Paperwhite starts at $130, with ads on the lockscreen.

It costs $20 to remove them and preorders are available now. Shipments start on November 7th.

Kobo Forma is a Very Slim E-Reader With Ergonomic Design and Mobius Display

By Radu Iorga

Kobo announced a few hours ago a new e-reader, a waterproof model that’s dubbed Forma. The device is very slim and it’s expected to be up for preorder on October 16th, priced at $280. The device has an 8 inch Mobius display and it weighs 15% less than the Kobo Aura ONE.

It meets IPX8 standards, so it can be dunked in water up to 6 feet deep for 60 minutes. It also comes with the ComfortLight PRO system, that adjusts blue light exposure during the day. The storage capacity is 8 GB, but there will also be a version with 32 GB of storage in the mix, only for the Japanese market. Kobo promised availability in other countries at later dates.

Kobo Forma has page turning buttons on its right side, for improved physical feedback and its E-Ink Mobius display is supposed to be a slim, flexible panel. Its flexibility makes it very resilient to impact and rough handling. It can withstand being dropped from over 6 feet and bent and twisted in bags and schoolbags.

This newcomer can store 6000 e-books and it’ll be up for preorder in black from October 16th, reaching stores on the 23rd in areas like Canada, US, UK, Italy, France, Japan and more. It can be used in both portrait and landscape mode and it comes with integrated eBook borrowing. You can order it here.

Boyue Likebook Mars is a New E-Reader With an Octa Core Processor

By Radu Iorga

Boyue Technology is a company from China that makes a series of E-Readers with E Ink display, which go from 6.7 inches to 10.3 inches. Their latest such product is the Boyue Likebook Mars, that feels closer to a tablet rather than an E-reader. Let’s check it out.

Inside it there’s an octa core Rockchip RK3368 processor, a 64 bit CPU, which seems a bit too much for a device that’s basically just meant to read books, magazines, comic books and the works. A short presentation video also appeared showing quite a few third party apps installed on the machine. There’s OverDrive, Nook, Google Play Books, Amazon Kindle, Audible, Adobe Acrobat and FBReader.

The good news is that we also have Google Play Store installed, meaning we have access to a ton of apps and games, but I doubt you can enjoy all of them on such a monochrome display. There’s also the issue of the low screen refresh rate. The specs of the device include a 7.8 inch with a 1404 x 1872 pixel resolution, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage and a microSD card slot.

We’ve also got dual band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and a 0.4 inch waistline. The OS of choice is Likebook OS, which is a tweaked version of Android, apparently. Expect a price close to the $199 of the Likebook Plus.

Amazon Debuts Gold Version of Kindle Oasis Reader

By Radu Iorga

Amazon launched this week a new version of the Kindle Oasis reader, available in gold, but without the cellular connectivity. It’s been five months since the device’s debut and now the second color option is here.

Kindle Oasis is available in champagne gold, but it keeps the dark gray hue upfront. It’s meant to make the text pop up, while the back side is covered in “pale gold” and it’s made of aluminum. Kindle Oasis obviously keeps the specs, including 7 inch 300 ppi display and this time there’s no 8 GB of storage or cellular connection, like the OG Oasis had.

The gold unit offers 32 GB WiFi only, that’s the only setup. It’s priced at $280 with ads and $300 without. Interestingly enough, Kindle Fire tablets have been available in the brightest of colors, but somehow the e-readers have only come in black or white somehow. Of course there’s also the slightly gray Oasis, but let’s agree to call it black.

The latest version available is the Kindle Oasis 2 (2017), with waterproofing and Audible support. There’s Bluetooth here, which lets you connect to Bluetooth supporting headphones or speakers and react as a companion for audio books with a few taps. The resolution is 1680 x 1264 pixels and the asymmetric design is here to stay, for better grip.
