Amazon Debuts Gold Version of Kindle Oasis Reader

By Radu Iorga

Amazon launched this week a new version of the Kindle Oasis reader, available in gold, but without the cellular connectivity. It’s been five months since the device’s debut and now the second color option is here.

Kindle Oasis is available in champagne gold, but it keeps the dark gray hue upfront. It’s meant to make the text pop up, while the back side is covered in “pale gold” and it’s made of aluminum. Kindle Oasis obviously keeps the specs, including 7 inch 300 ppi display and this time there’s no 8 GB of storage or cellular connection, like the OG Oasis had.

The gold unit offers 32 GB WiFi only, that’s the only setup. It’s priced at $280 with ads and $300 without. Interestingly enough, Kindle Fire tablets have been available in the brightest of colors, but somehow the e-readers have only come in black or white somehow. Of course there’s also the slightly gray Oasis, but let’s agree to call it black.

The latest version available is the Kindle Oasis 2 (2017), with waterproofing and Audible support. There’s Bluetooth here, which lets you connect to Bluetooth supporting headphones or speakers and react as a companion for audio books with a few taps. The resolution is 1680 x 1264 pixels and the asymmetric design is here to stay, for better grip.

The new Kindle Oasis is my dream e-reader

By Darrell Etherington

Amazon’s newest Kindle Oasis arrived like the answer to a timely question  – mostly because I happened to request an update to the device right before it actually arrived. I’m an unabashed fan of the Kindle, dating back to its earliest days, so take that into consideration, but believe me when I say: The new Kindle Oasis is the Kindle update I’d hoped for, and more.… Read More

Barnes & Noble Launches NOOK GlowLight 3 E-Reader, Priced at $120

By Radu Iorga

Barnes & Noble has a new e-reader out, the NOOK GlowLight 3 model, priced at $120. It’s quite the jump from the $50 NOOK, but let’s see what it has to offer first. This is a multipurpose machine with Android software and a color screen, so we can already understand the price hike.

The product features a 6 inch E Ink display, physical buttons for page turns and 8 GB of storage. There’s also a front light, that can change colors in order to make reading in the dark more comfy. GlowLight 3 is up for preorder right now at $120 and seems to be envisioned as a rival for the Amazon Kindle PaperWhite. It’s also true that Amazon’s product lacks page turn buttons, so the NOOK has an advantage.

A plus is the fact that you don’t need to pay $20 extra to remove ads from the lockscreen, like it happens on Amazon’s products. The new e-reader offers a 300 dpi display and a battery life of 50 days of normal usage. We’ve got no microSD card slot or waterproofing, in case you’re wondering, but we do have WiFi a/b/g/n and a microUSB port. This device can be used to read titles bought from B&N but it also supports other DRM-free books and Adobe content.

The product is available from November 8th and you can get it here. It has a soft touch finish at the front and back for easier grip and comes with a special Night Mode, as well as free NOOK issue of select magazines.

Amazon Debuts New Kindle Oasis E-Reader, Now Water Resistant

By James A.

It’s waterproof device day it seems, since Amazon also debuted a water resilient e-reader, fresh after Huawei unveiled its own waterproof slate. The newcomer from Amazon is the Kindle Oasis, which is (beautifully) pictured above.

People have been asking for a waterproof e-reader from Amazon for a long while and their wishes have just become true. There are several interesting aspects about this product, like its Bluetooth support, longer battery life and aluminum design. The fresh Kindle Oasis has a 7 inch screen and it offers both e-book and audiobooks support. This is supposed to be a higher end device, one that offers a larger and brighter screen.

The higher res takes the pixel density to 300 ppi, fitting 30% more words on the display per page. There’s an increased number of LEDs and they’re more evenly spread. Oasis is water resistant within IP8X standards, meaning it can be dunked in up to 2 meters of water for up to 60 minutes. It comes with Bluetooth so it can hook up to headphones or speakers.

Priced at $290, this is certainly a more premium offering, that’s very slim at 3.4 mm, at least on one end. At the other end there’s a bit of a hump, but it’s supposed to be held better that way. Weighing at 195 grams, this is quite hefty from the predecessor’s 131 grams. It also offers 6 weeks of battery life and comes with a new range of covers. There will be two versions of the product, one with 8 GB of storage and one with 32 GB.

The second also has a 3G version. Specs include a dual core 1 GHz NXP i.MX7D processor and fast charging support.
