LG Patents World’s First Transparent Foldable Phone, Operated Via Rear Area

By Radu Iorga

LG patented yet another foldable phone, this time one that stands out of the crowd, because it’s transparent. The patent mentions ways you can operate the device by doing touch input using its rear side. LG has been experimenting with quite a few foldable device formats.

Usually we see them revolving around foldables that are clamshells and bend in a vertical manner, but this time it’s different. The company already unveiled a 77 inch flexible and transparent 4K OLED display at SID 2018. The idea of a double sided transparent smartphone is still pretty fresh. The new patent refers to a “Mobile Terminal” and it was filed 3 years ago, but approved this week.

The documents show a smartphone that’s basically all display and it’s able to bend. There’s a display area at the front and back of the phone. Bezels are narrow and everything is see though. Apparently, transparency can also change. If the transparency of the screen info is higher than 20%, the rear touch sensor is activated.

Once you fold the device open, the flexible screen is made of two parts, the left and right one. Each can independently show transparent or opaque content, with the degree of transparency depending on the angle at which you hold the machine. Once you do a fold, the transparency increases. This sure sounds like something extra compared to what Samsung and Huawei have been doing.

There are a lot of moving parts to get through and I imagine such a device would be very slim and have a “stub” with all the main components on the side.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 Already Rendered, Courtesy of Concept Creator

By Radu Iorga

Samsung Galaxy Fold is not even out yet and there’s already a Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 concept out there. There’s plenty to correct and fix and designer Concept Creator did it all. Let’s check out his concept.

The device fixes the format of the Galaxy Fold, that left a lot of room unused. A novelty is the stylus slot and the product has a rectangular approach, unlike the square one of the original. The two parts now come together as one, completely sandwiched and without leaving empty room or space between the parts.

The notch has been replaced with a camera cutout within the screen. We still have plenty of screen estate, with the main folding screen at 7.2 inches and another extra screen outside, at 5.4 inches. The big screen panel includes a dual camera cutout and a Time of Flight sensor, which feel a bit overkill for a supposedly front camera.

The amount of detail and work involved in this concept is downright impressive. Just the sync of the frames with the music must’ve been hard. I’m getting some serious Samsung Galaxy W vibes here, when the device is closed and it looks much better than the Galaxy Fold 1. The stylus feels like overkill. I’d take this over the Huawei Mate X.

ZTE’s Foldable Smartphone Pops Up in Patents and Renders, is a Clamshell

By Radu Iorga

After Huawei and Samsung, ZTE is also throwing its hat in the foldable smartphone ring. The company recently patented a folding phone with a clamshell vertical design. Once you fold it, a small part of the screen will remain usable at the bottom.

ZTE was actually a pioneer of foldables, as they unveiled the Axon M back in October 2017. Back then it flopped, because the world wasn’t ready for such a format, but maybe now is the time for it. The renders made by Letsgodigital show us a device that’s rather long vertically and it bends down the middle. It’s not very far from the rumored Moto RAZR 2019 model, to be honest.

This clamshell seems to have a metal case, unless my eyes are mistaking me. ZTE filed the design patent for this screen in April last year, over at the World Intellectual Property Office. It was only on March 5th 2019 that it got published. Interestingly, this ZTE device has two back cameras on the bulkier part of the body and two other cameras at the top side of the slimmer folding part.

TCL was also making a phone like this at some point. ZTE already launched a 5G phone already, so it will be a formality to get that feature here. The company isn’t doing great right now, between the $900 million fine last year in USA and the lack of a real groundbreaking product.

This Afternoon’s Video Worth Sharing: Huawei Or WOW Way! Mate X Foldable Phone

By Tim

While the World slept in On Sunday, I certainly did not! The Huawei Mate X foldable phone has already stolen Samsung’s thunder! So make sure to check out the video below from Ben, over at Ben’s gadget reviews to get some on the scene video and great info!

As usual, all feedback positive or negative is encouraged!

Videos or Links Mentioned in the video:

This is a thinner, larger, useable phone as compared to the Samsung Fold. Overall, although the price will be ridiculous, Huawei did a much better job than Sand.

So lets get right to that video and make sure to check Ben’s link above for a lot more detail.

That is all for now, except please subscribe to our channel or click those big donation buttons on the website here!

iPhone X Fold Proposes New Approach for Apple Foldable Phone

By Radu Iorga

A few days ago we saw a bunch of renders showing off various versions of foldable iPhones in patents. Those inspired a few renders and concepts, but not hugely convincing ones. A new render appears today, clearly inspired by the Galaxy Fold. Meet the iPhone X Fold below.

The device has some elegance about it and very discrete hinge. It’s well disguised and from what I can see the screen seemed layered on a flexible skeleton. From what I can see the device is all screen, tow two screens inside and at least one outside, maybe even two, for a total of 4 screens. When totally opened the hinge becomes invisible and there’s no seam or crease.

The way the device looks when folded reminds me of an older Nokia Communicator, or a smaller Sony Vaio. If this device really happens, that should go down in 2020, according to insiders. The iPhone X Fold has a 1:3 aspect ratio for the external screen, while the inner screen has a 2:3 aspect. Just for the sake of accuracy, this concept was designed by Roy Gilsing for Foldable.News.

The landscape view of the device triggers a very convincing virtual keyboard and there’s that Sony Vaio comparison again… It feels like a mini notebook with a hole cutout for the camera. We don’t have a diagonal size here, but I’m guessing 7 inches is the way to for the unfolded machine.
