GPD Win 2 Max Gets Detailed Online: Latest Portable Console, Ready to Debut This Year

By Radu Iorga

GPD is a brand that first comes to mind when thinking about portable consoles that are crossed with tablets. Their latest such initiative is the GPD Win 2 Max, a handheld game console that’s coming in 2019 and it has just been detailed online.

The GPD Pocket models are basically miniature laptops with Windows 10, but then there’s the GPD Win, which is more about gaming. It had a thumb keyboard, game controller buttons and a clamshell design, that lets you fold the device up and carry it in a pocket (a hefty one). the GPD Win 2 was released last year with a CPU bump, extra RAM, faster storage and more.

GPD Win 3 is coming, but till it arrives there’s an intermediary version dubbed GPD Win 2 Max, which is coming this year. All we had till now was a name and that’s it. However, if you look it up on Reddit you may discover some details and teasers. The product will have a 1280 x 800 pixel display, a 25 watt AMD processor and a GPD Pocket style keyboard.

In one of the shots made public by GPD, the device looks a bit like a PS Vita from the profile. It’s got quite a few ports, all the necessary USBs, HDMIs and so forth, plus what appears to be a decent cooling system. GPD has started sending out beta test kits, so things are in gear. I expect 8 GB of RAM inside, 128 GB of storage or more, expandable storage and a 6+ inch diagonal.

GPD Pocket 2 Still on Track for Launch, Gets New Details and Crowdfunding Campaign

By Radu Iorga

GPD makes a few “mini laptop” styled tablets, aimed for gaming and maybe some productivity. They feel like a combo of a smaller tablet and a Nintendo 3DS of sorts. The GPD Pocket 2 is supposed to be the latest in the series and after a long period of teasing and leaks, today it also gets some press shots and details.

The ultraportable machine has been available via Indiegogo with a crowdfunding campaign associated, but it doesn’t seem to have started just yet. The Indiegogo page mentions a pocket-sized computer that’s meant for your mobile computing needs. It’s not just for gaming, but also for business professional features. The body adopts an unibody approach, made of “machined mangalium”, as the official source mentions.

The product fits in a pocket and it’s promoted as a product that beats the Microsoft Surface Pro Core m3 version in performance. The maximum weight will be less than 500 grams and the device will come with a 7 inch screen (at least, but it may be more). It’ll use a traditional keyboard layout, a microSD card slot and USB-A ports, which support the expansion of space without needing an extra USB HUB.

Active cooling is also here, intend for a passively cooled ultraslim design, in order to not sacrifice performance. GPD Pocket 2 has two USB-A and one USB Type-C port and the rumors talk about a price between $500 and $600. The funding goal is $100,000, so only 200 backers are needed. It’ll run Windows 10 Home, offer a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio and an Intel Core m3 CPU.

4 GB or 8 GB of RAM, WiFi a/b/g/n/ac and 128 GB of storage are all here. I recommend caution, as such things may change over night.
