The Basic Premise Of THE TABLET SERVER Is Relatively Simple, But In Case You Missed it Please Read This!

By Tim

The Original Tablet Server

The tablet server web site has been around since August of 2014 in one form or another and occupying a few different domains. It has been moved and shifted and adjusted to meet the demands of traffic and also to allow for easy access.

We have changed the name over the years from a freebie dynamic domain name from ChangeIP .com to a full fledged “real” domain name. One thing that has never changed here is the desire to prove that a tablet can be a viable web server and that notebooks and laptops can do the same! (and yes, we have even run it on a smartphone a few times!)

Considering the fact that this site has run on an Asus Memo Pad HD7,  then an Asus ME572C, (which was incredible), and a Dragon Touch X10 and an Asus Z580CA to start with, I think our point has been proven. Since late 2015/early 2016 we have been on a HiBook Chuwi tablet or a Chuwi Hi12. Sure we have even run the site off an Asus X553SA notebook and it worked great!

We have been on Android, and Windows 7, using a Linux VM and currently Windows 10 with a Linux VM. (Yes, Linux makes a superior and far more cross device system than Windows itself).

I mentioned in a post a few years back that if you had a cable connection you could easily run your own web server. These days, with the faster connection speeds and the fact we have tablets like the Hi12, that I have let run for 22+ hrs as the server, there is no need to purchase expensive hardware or pay expensive hosting fees.

You can run your own back-ups and if needed rebuild your small business server in literally an hour or so if it gets broken, which does happen. All it takes is half a brain and the willingness to think outside the box.

You might be wondering where all this is going and now we get to the meat of this post. That is the simple fact that you need only look for one thing when buying a new tablet/notebook or even a smartphone and that is to decide which will get the job that YOU need done without issues!

Don’t be fooled by the thinner is better crowd, nor the metal is premium jabber. Yeah, those all sound good, but how many of you have a metal dashboard in your car? Let that sink in, the answer is, unless you belong to the metal and heavier and more power is better crowd, well then the answer is none!

Do you buy the latest fashions? I certainly hope not, because do not blue jeans and a t-shirt work as well as a Brooks Brothers suit? Yeah it is sort of like that, do not be a sheep, do not buy what the media describes as bleeding edge, just read, watch, learn and then decide what gets the job done.

I will never recommend anything that the average Joe can’t afford and I will never, ever, tell you something is worth buying without either thorough researching or having owned said product myself (and usually having tried to kill it).

That is all I have on a Monday,

Tim

The HiBook News, This Edition: An Update to Google Chrome Has Fixed My Screen Issues!

By Tim

A number of weeks back I wrote about a memory issue where when running Chrome  on the Hi12, if my screen went off it wouldn’t wake up. This annoying issue has forced me to use Microsoft Edge which is, to put it mildly, garbage.

Now this issue only affected my Hi12 and not the HiBook, but since I use the Hi12 as my daily driver at work, this was a very annoying issue. So every day I check for Chrome updates on the Hi12 and yesterday it updated and lo and behold the issue has virtually disappeared! Sure it went to sleep once in the last 24 hrs and did not wake up, but it used to be every time and even using the Edge browser it would happen occasionally.

Sure the Hi12 still has issues with the BIOS being non-writable and     the memory only running at 1066 MHz rather than the full 1600 MHz, but it is still faster than the HiBook and of course has the killer 2160 x 1440 display. Let us not forget the absolutely fantastic battery life of about 10 hrs of normal heavy use!

As for the HiBook, it continues to be the primary server for this site and works flawlessly in that capacity. Sure I have to keep a handle on files that I store on it because the Hi12 gets the big 64 GB microSD card and all the HiBook has free is about 10 GB. Keep in mind that the server Virtual Machine itself sucks up 12 GB of disk space, so in truth I would have all sorts of room if I wasn’t running a server on it.

This is the primary reason that my next device will have easily expandable, SSD type storage. Of course that is the reason I am looking so hard at notebooks and have yet to decide upon one. Of course we are all still waiting on the Chuwi LapBook Air which, if it has an easily accessible SSD expansion slot like the Chuwi LapBook 12.3, would probably be my first choice.

By the way you can still find an Hi12 for only $215 on Gearbest and the HiBook Pro with a larger battery and the Z8350 processor can be found right here for about the same price of $215.

That is all we have for today,

Tim

Today’s Video Worth Sharing: Stuff That Works For Me!

By Tim

Today’s video is informative but was also a test of the new little app I got for my phone. You see I did a similar video the other day using one of those cheap mics I purchased and the audio was simply horrible.

So I poked around and found an app for my phone called Wo Mic. It allows you to connect your Android to your PC/Tablet/Mac via WiFi or Bluetooth or even USB. I liked it enough to purchase the Pro version and get a few extra features and remove the ads for $3.99.

Since the best mic I have is by far the one on my phone this has proven to be well worth the download!

So the audio was really excellent in the test video here using WiFi via the Zotac PC.

Here is the video…

That is all I have for now,

Tim

How To Get That Cool Battery Icon On Your Win 10 Tablet, Yes It Is Free.

By Tim

Many times when you watch those online reviewers chat about battery life and percentages and charging you will notice that big battery icon down on the task bar. We are not talking the generic Windows 10 icon that requires a click mouse-over to see how much battery is left.

The BatteryBar Basic Version gives you a very nifty icon that can show battery percentage, or time left to complete the charging or how much battery time you have remaining and a bit of other info.

That other info will show you  all sorts of more detailed info! The picture below illustrates that…

I went ahead and put this on the HiBook this evening since it is the primary test tablet and all appears okay so far.

It appears to be quite nifty and of course they also have a Pro Version. But to get the free/basic version, just click this link!

That is all I have at the current moment,

Tim

The HiBook News: This Edition, The Chuwi HiBook Is a Year Old And Still Going Strong!

By Tim

So I looked back at all the posts on this site and although I knew I had received the HiBook in August of 2016, I hadn’t realized it was on August 8th! So this is a belated anniversary post written, of course, on The HiBook itself! As near as I can figure, this post was the very first post I created on the HiBook tablet in a VM on Windows 10.

Apparently I moved rather quickly from receiving the tablet to setting up a VM in addition to doing a crappy unboxing video that was posted on whatever, (most likely my Asus Z580CA tablet), was running THE Tablet Test Server, previous to the initial post on this device.

So now moving on to technical stuff! This week I noticed something that set off some alarm bells and that was the battery life remaining on the HiBook when I arrived home after work. Normally it sits at 46-51%, not this week, uh nope! It was sitting as low as 19% one evening and in the lower 20’s on the other days!

So I thought about it, it could have been happening for several reasons. Perhaps after roughly 365 recharges the battery had gone to hell in a handcart? Perhaps there was another hardware issue? After considering all those things, I took a peek at task manager and there was Flashback 5 running in the background merrily using up about 10-15% CPU! That is when I remembered that I had used it to see if the plugin mics I had bought would work using the headset jack. I never recorded anything, I was just checking the input levels and then I minimized it.

So last night I turned that CPU hog off, rebooted Winderz for good measure and today I arrived home with 49% battery remaining! So issue solved, never jump to any conclusions, think, explore all options, then act on the most likely cause.

I would also like to point out the reliability of this tablet. For the most part for the last year this tablet was on and running! When not in use as a server it has always been my favorite movie viewing device. So we are looking at literally thousands of hours of on time here!

And now a short word from the HiBook…

In response to the HiBook…NO.

That is all I have at this time,

Tim
