Tonight’s Video Worth Sharing: Feds Dropped the Hammer on Huawei and ZTE, Will This Have Any Real Effect?

By Tim

Yesterday the U.S. Federal government pass a new appropriations bill for Nation Defense and included it it was the banning of federal employees, contractors, etc, for using ZTE or Huawei devices or components in government equipment.

Obviously the first thought is how will this affect these 2 Chinese tech giants?

In truth, this will have little to no effect on Huawei since without a direct USA carrier supplier they are still the number 2 smartphone selling mfg on earth!

ZTE may have a few issues figuring out ways to get its Axon9 into the US market. Time will tell, but neither of these companies will be hurting much due to the new legislation.

Below is a short video explaining the situation…

Apple, Huawei and Microsoft on Upswing in Tablet Segment, in Spite of Trends

By James A.

Since it’s the start of a new month, it’s also the end of a fiscal quarter, which brings some sales figures and shipments. We’re here to tackle the tablet segment, which is as usual in a downturn, but some companies are still making a nice buck off it. Apple especially, having reached 1 trillion valuation recently and all.

The global tablet shipments are in and they’re showing a total of 40.9 million units shipped between April and June 2018. This means a decline of 6% compared to the same time frame in 2017. This is also the 14th consecutive quarter of things working badly, but there are also some silver linings. For example two of the top 5 companies managed to boost their shipments and share scores, even though the leader, Apple registered just a 1% growth year over year.

Apple remains on the top spot, with 11.6 million units shipped and a 28.2% market share, according to Strategy Analytics. Second placed is Samsung with 5 million units and a 12.2% share, down from the last year 5.8 million and 13.2% respectively. We also see Huawei here with positive numbers, of 3.7 million units and a share of 9.1%. This is up from the 3.2 million units of last year and the 7.3% share.

Lenovo dipped in the meantime by 200k units, while Amazon also dropped 500k and almost one point of market share. Microsoft, even though it’s not in the stats still had a total of 1 million unis shipped over the last quarter through the Surface Pro and Surface Book 2 products. The company is on a roll coming off of a straight double digit growth.

Now they also have the Surface Go to increase the handicap even more. Windows detachables are expect to have a boon this year and the next, till Google counters them with Chrome OS detachables.

Huawei Honor Note 10 Debuts With 7 inch Screen, Kirin 970 CPU, Liquid Cooling

By James A.

Huawei Honor Note 10 is supposed to be the latest smartphone on the market, but it feels more like a tablet. It’s got a 7 inch screen, it’s focused on gaming and has a flagship CPU inside, the Kirin 970. And the price is not half bad.

Just unveiled officially, the device packs a solid AMOLED 6.95 inch screen panel with Full HD+ resolution, HDR10 support and somehow without a notch. It also has a 115% NTSC color support and comes with an octa core HiSilicon Kirin 970 CPU. Also on board are 6 or 8 GB of RAM, plus 64 or 128 GB of storage. A liquid cooling sollution is included here, as part of a 9 layer system used for heat dissipation.

Of course, the device has GPU Turbo, but also a new feature called CPU Turbo. They both work in tandem forming the Double Turbo mode, activated via a dedicated hardware button. That button can also serve as the shutter key for the camera. Speaking of which, the Honor Note 10 offers a dual back shooter with 24 MP + 16 MP combo, while upfront sits a 13 MP camera. It’s got the usual AI setup for scene recognition and other AI features.

Android 8.1 Oreo also makes the cut, with EMUI 8.2 on top and a 5000 mAh battery is in the mxi as well. Super Charge is supported and the price sounds pretty nice to me. I’m talking about a $409 starting sum, for the 6 GB RAM, 64 GB storage model. The 6 GB RAM, 128 GB model goes for $468 and the 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage unit goes for $527. It’ll be available in Midnight Black and Phantom Blue from August 1st.

Huawei Accelerates Development of Foldable Smartphone, In Order to Beat Samsung To It

By Radu Iorga

Samsung has been messing around with foldable phones for years now and if you look back at things like Project Youm from 2014 you’ll see what I mean. Nikkei is now saying that somehow they’ll be beaten for the premiere of such a device by none other than Huawei. They’ve accelerated their efforts in foldables recently.

Samsung’s patents for the product have been leaking like crazy, followed by Microsoft’s, but now there’s a new kid in town. That’s Huawei, also working hard at the project. According to the Nikkei sources, Huawei has to speed things up and develop the foldable phone fast. They want to surpass Samsung and release the handset before them, meaning before 2019.

At around CES 2019 we should see Samsung’s Galaxy X, or something close to it. Huawei has partnered with Chinese screen maker BOE Technology Group for the project and they’ll be supplying flexible OLED screens, with an initial production of 20,000 to 30,000 units. A media demonstration will also follow, plus early adopters and demos. It’s not very clear when the commercial version will arrive. BOE has managed to pull off some very nice prototypes, but there are also other components to consider.

Huawei is still phone maker number 3 in the top 10 and their aim is to become number one in the next 5 years. They’ve already beaten Apple for a month or a quarter last year and they want to repeat that soon. However, innovation and experiments aren’t always a sure bet and they can backfire. Huawei is throwing serious money behind R&D, so they should know what they’re doing.

A small scale rollout should happen first and then the big one.

Huawei MediaPad M5 Starts Getting Updated With GPU Turbo Functionality

By Radu Iorga

It appears that Huawei is not only bringing the GPU Turbo functionality to phones, but also tablets, like the Huawei MediaPad M5. The device has just started receiving the new feature, as revealed online by a few sources. Let’s see what it brings.

Weeks ago Huawei announced that the GPU Turbo update would be coming to Honor and Huawei P and Mate series device, plus a few other midrangers. Tablets were also part of the package. This software released improves graphics efficiency by up to 60% and also reduces system on chip energy usage by 30%. The software is being rolled out to smartphones gradually and slates too.

Huawei announced on Weibo that owners of the MediaPad M5 will get the GPU Turbo update from today. This is the first tablet to support the gaming-oriented system and in order to make it work, you need to go to Settings/System/System Update. This will improve your battery consumption in gaming and also preserve the battery. Performance should also go up. Huawei MediaPad M5 is a tablet released in April 2018 and it’s available in 3 versions: an 8.4 inch model, 10.8 inch one and MediaPad M5 Pro.

All of them rely on a Kirin 960 CPU, 4 GB of RAM and 32, 64 or 128 GB of storage. The devices run on Android 8.0, have 13 megapixel cameras and generous 2560 x 1600 pixel resolutions. The bigger units have quad speakers, so audio is also a premium feature here.
