Huawei Prepping Two Tablets With 48 Megapixel Sony Camera Sensors

By Radu Iorga

Fresh after finding out that Huawei surpassed Samsung to become the second biggest tablet maker after Apple, we learn that the Chinese firm is working on two new tablets. They’re going to be packing some serious camera firepower, as rumors are talking about a 48 megapixel camera on board.

Huawei is working on two tablets, with Kirin 980 CPUs inside. One of them will have an 8.4 inch screen with a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution and the other will be a 10.7 incher with the same resolution. These are said to be the the Huawei MediaPad M6 tablets, that will pack a 4200 mAh and 7500 mAh battery respectively. The source, Mishaal Rahman claims that the info was mined from source and there’s no guarantee everything has been interpreted correctly.

The camera configs aren’t known, just the sensors. We may even end up with dual cameras, or maybe a crazy triple camera tablet. The MediaPad M5 10 (Pro) had a Kirin 960 CPU, a 7500 mAh battery and a 10.8 inch Quad HD screen, so it makes sense to find the above mentioned specs on the new 10 incher. Also, just like the predecessor we should also get stylus support and a pretty solid selfie camera. A fingerprint scanner should also make the cut, plus an USB Type-C port.

EMUI should also get bumped up on these devices. I’d predict a launch at IFA 2019, if not earlier.

Huawei Beats Samsung on Tablet Market, Now Second Placed After Apple

By Radu Iorga

The tablet market has registered a shift in power over the last quarter, as Huawei replaced Samsung as the second most prolific tablet maker. Apple remains top dog, but Huawei is closing in, having already beaten the Cupertino giant in the smartphone wars.

The latest Digitimes Research estimates show that the latest iPad Mini and iPad Air models have boosted the entire tablet market out of its coma. 37.15 million slates have been sold globally between January and March 2019. Apple has the lion’s share of the sales, of course. The iPads sold 25.8% of all tablets in 2018 and early 2019 is said to have boosted the numbers.

Huawei’s MediaPad lineup has also grown quite a bit, even though the global tablet shipments shrunk compared to Q4 2018 by 12.9%. Another year on year decline is expected in Q2 2019. Interestingly, Huawei was placed fourth in the tablet market in Q4 2018 and now it jumps to second. Microsoft also jumped from sixth to fifth place, beating Lenovo.

Amazon was number four, registering shipment decreases in Q1 and expecting a similar turnout for Q2 2019. We’re still waiting on figures for Q1 2019, since all we have are estimates. In the meantime we learn that Qualcomm beat Mediatek as the number 2 supplier of CPUs for tablets in the past 3 months.

Huawei MateBook E 2019 Debuts, With Snapdragon 850 CPU Inside

By Radu Iorga

Huawei is expanding its notebook lineup, by launching the Huawei MateBook E 2019 laptop. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 processor, an unusual choice, seeing how Huawei doesn’t even put Qualcomm CPUs on its phones. The 2 in 1 device runs on Windows 10 Home.

This is a fanless machine, that uses 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, or 512 GB, of the UFS variety. There’s also 4G LTE support via nano SIM, as expected from a Snapdragon notebook. We also see 4X4 MIMO antenna technology in the mix, Bluetooth 5.0 and dual band WiFi. The screen is a 12 inch touchscreen with a 2160 x 1440 pixel resolution and a 3:2 aspect, plus a 160 degree viewing angle.

It has an oleophobic coating to avoid stains and smudges, plus it tries to keep the blue light out as much as possible. Specs include a 13 megapixel main camera and a 5 MP front shooter, with the main camera feeling like overkill on a laptop. For security there’s a side mounted fingerprint scanner and the MateBook E 2019 plays nicely with the Huawei M Pen Lite stylus (sold separately).

The keyboard has a 1.3 mm key travel and the device gets propped up by a kickstand that can be adjusted between 110 and 160 degrees. You can also use the laptop in tent mode. On the entertainment front, there’s dual speakers with dual smartPA amplifiers and Dolby Atmos. Connectivity is actually solid, with USB Type-C for charging, transfers and DisplayPort purposes, plus even an audio jack.

The battery offers up to 10 hours of media playbck at 50% brightness and it’s a 36.3 Wh unit, with fast charging. The whole thing measures 8.5 mm in thickness and weighs 698 grams sans keyboard or 1.173 kg with keyboard. The price starts at $595 and color choices are Titanium Ash and Charm Blue Sea.

Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite 8 Is a New 8 Inch Budget Tablet With a Kirin 710 Processor Inside

By Radu Iorga

Huawei is keeping busy ahead of the Huawei P30 Pro unveiling tomorrow and it announced a brand new tablet, the MediaPad M5 Lite 8 model. This one is an 8 inch budget offering with a Kirin 710 CPU.

It’s actually the smaller version of the MediaPad M5 Lite announced last October. This version also brings some upgrades and relies on the powerful Kirin 710 CPU, which we already saw in action on the Huawei Mate 20 Lite and Honor 8X phones. The design is pretty standard and the product comes with two speakers, both placed at the back and tuned by Harman Kardon. They also offer Huawei Histen sound effects.

The Kirin 710 CPU is clocked at 2.2 GHz and the slate ships with 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of storage, plus a microSD card slot. The device’s 8 inch screen has a Full HD resolution and uses 2.5D curved glass. It runs on Android 9.0 Pie with EMUI 9.0 on top and also uses a 5100 mAh battery. Camera-wise, there’s a 13 MP shooter at the back side, plus an 8 MP cam upfront.

The device will be available in Dark Gray and Champagne Gold and it’ll go on sale in China today, starting at $178. That’s the WiFi only 3 GB RAM version, while the 4G/ 4 GB RAM one is $238.

Huawei Honor Tab 5 is a New Android Tablet Priced Below $200

By Radu Iorga

Huawei’s sub brand Honor unveiled today a brand new tablet dubbed Honor Tab 5, priced at a mere $165. It’s available in China for starters and it’s going to pack an 8 inch display and a Kirin 710 processor.

The product is supposed to be part of the new wave of slates capitalizing on the rebirth of the segment. It comes as a preemptive strike for the iPad Mini 5, with midrange specs. The Kirin 710 CPU actually held its own against Snapdragon 636 and 660 on the Huawei Mate 20 Lite and Honor 8X phones, so it’s quite a good choice.

The tablet also brings a 1920 x 1200 pixel display, a Mali G51 MP4 set of graphics, a 5100 mAh battery and stereo speakers. There’s also an 8 megapixel camera at the back and one at the front. Other specs include an audio jack, microSD card slot and the device is available in 4 configs in China:

  • 3GB/32GB/WiFi – $165
  • 4GB/64GB/WiFi – $195
  • 3GB/32GB/WiFi + 4G LTE – $210
  • 4GB/64GB/WiFi + 4G LTE – $225

No idea if and when the device debuts in Europe or USA. I see there’s also Dolby Atmos acoustics here.
