More and More Smartphone Makers Are Working on Foldable Devices, That Turn Into Tablets

By Radu Iorga

Last month’s release of the ZTE Axon M seems to have started a trend or should I say restarted, because we’ve been talking about flexible phones for a decade now. If you don’t believe me, just Google Nokia Morph and you’ll see what I mean. What was sci-fi back in 2008 is slowly becoming reality now, as we prepare for the foldable devices first and then the flexible ones. And more and more device makers are jumping on the bandwagon.

We’ve got Microsoft ready to resurrect the Courier project as a foldable machine. Then comes Samsung with their Galaxy X, which may or may not be a typical flexible phone. And recently Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu confirmed that his company was also working on a device of this sort. Huawei’s dual screen smartphone is set for unveiling before the year end of 2018.

Oppo has applied to patents for a product from a similar vein, featuring foldable screens in the upper part of the smartphone. Samsung has applied for similar patents too in USA, some of them already popping up and showing a dual display UI. LG Display is developing foldable screens, while also working with Apple to come up with a more pragmatic device in the 2020s.

For now only ZTE and Lenovo have put their foldable vision into practice. Who’s next? CES 2018 will provide the answer.

Huawei Working on Folding Phone Too, as Segment Becomes Bigger Ahead of 2018

By James A.

While 2017 was all about edge to edge screens and dual cameras, 2018 may just be the year of folding phones. ZTE already launched one and Microsoft and Samsung have multiple patents hinting at their own such products. Huawei joins the list, working on its own folding phone.

People want a bit more though and some are expecting maybe a flexible OLED setup. Now we know that Richard Yu, Huawei CEO told CNET that the company was working on a prototype of a foldable phone, but it’s a two screen model, like the ZTE Axon M. Richard Yu also claims that the company is going to eliminate the gap between the screens, something that other firms have had trouble with.

The aim is to achieve a single, flexible screen solution and a bezel less approach if possible. The idea is to use them both as a singular screen, with zero seam between them. 2018 is going to mark the debut of the device and we have no idea if it will be commercially viable, or just an experiment and concept like Huawei Honor Magic. A limited run is very likely and the device’s failure or win is going to signal the downfall or evolution of the format.

ZTE Axon M hasn’t quite convinced naysayers to be honest…

Huawei bets big on AI features in new Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro smartphones

By Valentina Palladino

Huawei’s first “AI-powered” smartphone, the Mate 9, debuted last year, and the Chinese company continues to dive further into the benefits of artificial intelligence in its newest smartphones. Huawei announced the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro smartphones today, both of which promise not only hardware improvements over the Mate 9, but also more AI power thanks to a dedicated neural network processing unit (NPU). While most of us are accustomed to AI assistants on our smartphones (think Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana, and Alexa), Huawei is taking a more embedded approach to AI, focusing on how a dedicated NPU can increase performance and efficiency over time as it learns about everything you do with your smartphone.

Design

The Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro have a number of small and somewhat confusing differences between them. Let’s first cover what they have in common: both run Android Oero and EMUI 8.0. Huawei’s Kirin 970 CPU, 12-core Mali G72 GPU, and new NPU for AI processing power both devices. The handsets also have the same 4,000 mAh battery that supports fast charging, allowing them to charge up to 58 percent in just 30 minutes.

Huawei continues its collaboration with Leica on the Mate 10 handsets. Both have dual f/1.6 rear camera setups, featuring a 20MP monochrome lens and a 12MP RGB lens with optical image stabilization. The front-facing camera is the same, standard 8MP shooter on both models, too. Both the Mate 10 and the Mate 10 Pro have all-glass bodies with a nearly one-inch-wide, reflective stripe on the back of the handset underneath the camera setup. The smartphones’ design is very similar to the Mate 9, just with slightly slimmer bezels and refined details.

Huawei Honor WaterPlay is a Brand New Tablet That Bets on Waterproofing, Has $300 Price Tag

By James A.

There’s a new Huawei tablet in town, a device pertaining to the Honor series. It’s called Honor WaterPlay and it’s priced at $300. I’d see it in the hands of someone who wants to binge watch a TV show even if it’s time for a long hot bath.

This is obviously an Android tablet, with IP67 rating and it can survive dunks of up to one meter in depth and only for half an hour. The slate offers a 10.1 inch 1920 x 1200 pixel display and relies on the same Kirin 659 processor which we recently saw on the Honor 7X handset. There’s also 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of storage, but the version with extras takes you higher than $300 of course.

The device also uses a microSD card slot, a fingerprint scanner and a 3.5 mm audio jack, plus it has a 6660 mAh battery with 18W fast charging. There’s Android 7.0 Nougat on top with EMUI 5.1 available. An 8 megapixel camera is also spotted here, plus a front cam for good measure. On the connectivity front, LTE is available in optional manner, plus WiFi ac, Bluetooth 4.1 and GPS.

The USB is of the Type-C variety. The whole thing measures 7.8 mm in thickness and weighs 465 grams. Available in silver and champagne gold, the device will go on sale in China come October 24th. The version with extra RAM goes for $364 and if you also want LTE it’s going to cost you $409.
