Huawei MateBook E 2019 Debuts, With Snapdragon 850 CPU Inside

By Radu Iorga

Huawei is expanding its notebook lineup, by launching the Huawei MateBook E 2019 laptop. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 processor, an unusual choice, seeing how Huawei doesn’t even put Qualcomm CPUs on its phones. The 2 in 1 device runs on Windows 10 Home.

This is a fanless machine, that uses 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, or 512 GB, of the UFS variety. There’s also 4G LTE support via nano SIM, as expected from a Snapdragon notebook. We also see 4X4 MIMO antenna technology in the mix, Bluetooth 5.0 and dual band WiFi. The screen is a 12 inch touchscreen with a 2160 x 1440 pixel resolution and a 3:2 aspect, plus a 160 degree viewing angle.

It has an oleophobic coating to avoid stains and smudges, plus it tries to keep the blue light out as much as possible. Specs include a 13 megapixel main camera and a 5 MP front shooter, with the main camera feeling like overkill on a laptop. For security there’s a side mounted fingerprint scanner and the MateBook E 2019 plays nicely with the Huawei M Pen Lite stylus (sold separately).

The keyboard has a 1.3 mm key travel and the device gets propped up by a kickstand that can be adjusted between 110 and 160 degrees. You can also use the laptop in tent mode. On the entertainment front, there’s dual speakers with dual smartPA amplifiers and Dolby Atmos. Connectivity is actually solid, with USB Type-C for charging, transfers and DisplayPort purposes, plus even an audio jack.

The battery offers up to 10 hours of media playbck at 50% brightness and it’s a 36.3 Wh unit, with fast charging. The whole thing measures 8.5 mm in thickness and weighs 698 grams sans keyboard or 1.173 kg with keyboard. The price starts at $595 and color choices are Titanium Ash and Charm Blue Sea.

Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite 8 Is a New 8 Inch Budget Tablet With a Kirin 710 Processor Inside

By Radu Iorga

Huawei is keeping busy ahead of the Huawei P30 Pro unveiling tomorrow and it announced a brand new tablet, the MediaPad M5 Lite 8 model. This one is an 8 inch budget offering with a Kirin 710 CPU.

It’s actually the smaller version of the MediaPad M5 Lite announced last October. This version also brings some upgrades and relies on the powerful Kirin 710 CPU, which we already saw in action on the Huawei Mate 20 Lite and Honor 8X phones. The design is pretty standard and the product comes with two speakers, both placed at the back and tuned by Harman Kardon. They also offer Huawei Histen sound effects.

The Kirin 710 CPU is clocked at 2.2 GHz and the slate ships with 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of storage, plus a microSD card slot. The device’s 8 inch screen has a Full HD resolution and uses 2.5D curved glass. It runs on Android 9.0 Pie with EMUI 9.0 on top and also uses a 5100 mAh battery. Camera-wise, there’s a 13 MP shooter at the back side, plus an 8 MP cam upfront.

The device will be available in Dark Gray and Champagne Gold and it’ll go on sale in China today, starting at $178. That’s the WiFi only 3 GB RAM version, while the 4G/ 4 GB RAM one is $238.

Huawei Honor Tab 5 is a New Android Tablet Priced Below $200

By Radu Iorga

Huawei’s sub brand Honor unveiled today a brand new tablet dubbed Honor Tab 5, priced at a mere $165. It’s available in China for starters and it’s going to pack an 8 inch display and a Kirin 710 processor.

The product is supposed to be part of the new wave of slates capitalizing on the rebirth of the segment. It comes as a preemptive strike for the iPad Mini 5, with midrange specs. The Kirin 710 CPU actually held its own against Snapdragon 636 and 660 on the Huawei Mate 20 Lite and Honor 8X phones, so it’s quite a good choice.

The tablet also brings a 1920 x 1200 pixel display, a Mali G51 MP4 set of graphics, a 5100 mAh battery and stereo speakers. There’s also an 8 megapixel camera at the back and one at the front. Other specs include an audio jack, microSD card slot and the device is available in 4 configs in China:

  • 3GB/32GB/WiFi – $165
  • 4GB/64GB/WiFi – $195
  • 3GB/32GB/WiFi + 4G LTE – $210
  • 4GB/64GB/WiFi + 4G LTE – $225

No idea if and when the device debuts in Europe or USA. I see there’s also Dolby Atmos acoustics here.

MWC 2019: Huawei Mate X Foldable Phone Debuts, Already Feels Like Galaxy Fold Killer

By James A.

Remember the Samsung Galaxy Fold? It debuted a week ago, as the first mainstream, big brand foldable phone, but it’s apparently a limited edition, priced at $2000. Huawei upped the ante at MWC 2019, by unveiling the Huawei Mate X, its own version of foldable smartphone. It’s bigger, sexier and… pricier.

The device has an 8 inch screen that folds on the side and has the folded part snap onto a sort of “stub”, that integrates the device’s camera. There’s a flexible 8 inch OLED screen here, available when the device is in tablet mode, opened up. When used in smartphone mode, it has a 6.6 inch screen and when you’re using the screen folded at the back you get a 6.38 inch diagonal.

The thickness is amazing here, a mere 5.4 mm in tablet mode and the device is much slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Even when folded, the 11 mm sound pretty OK. This is not just a foldable phone from Huawei, it’s also a 5G unit, courtesy of a Balong 5000 modem inside. Specs include a Kirin 980 CPU, a 4500 mAh battery with a crazy 55W charger.

The fingerprint scanner is integrated in the Power button and back to the screen panel, the 8 incher has a 2480 x 1220 pixels, showing us a square format. The 6.6 inch panel has a 2480 x 1148 pixel res. Huawei claims to have used a patented hinge design with over 100 components. Engineers needed 3 years to make this all happen.

The device can achieve up to 6.5/3.5 Gbps downlink and uplink speeds and there’s also a quad 5G antenna on board. There’s a triple camera here, powered by Leica optics, with a 40 MP, 16 MP and 8 MP sensor. Options are completed by the microSD card slot, WiFi ac and an USB Type-C port. Things aren’t perfect though, as this beast is priced at $2600. While the Galaxy Fold is coming in April, the Mate X is coming in June.

Move over Samsung, Huawei’s foldable smartphone is an absolute stunner

By Ron Amadeo

Hot on the heels of the announcement of Samsung’s first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, Huawei is taking a swing at the form factor with the Huawei Mate X. Huawei is taking a totally different approach compared to Samsung—its putting the display on the outside of the phone instead of on the inside, and this comes with a number of pros and cons.

But first, the specs. The Mate X has a massive 8-inch 2480×2200 OLED display that wraps around the phone body. When open, that’s a bigger screen than the Galaxy Fold, which is only 7.3-inches. When closed, the Mate X’s 8-inch display splits into a 6.6-inch, 2480 x 1148 display section on the front, and a 6.38-inch, 2480 x 892 section on the back. You can take your pick of front or back screen—the both dwarf the 4.6-inch, ridiculously-bezeled display on the front of the Galaxy Fold.

The lopsidedness of Huawei’s folded displays are due to a vertical camera bar that runs along the back of the phone. This houses three cameras—a 40 MP main camera, a 16 MP wide angle lens, and an 8 MP telephoto—and an LED flash, and a power button. It’s also the only section of the phone that is 11mm thick, which gives you both a place to hold the device, and provides room for bigger components like the USB-C port on the bottom and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. There is still no room for a headphone jack, though.
