Huawei MateBook X Pro Now Available Priced at $1199, With Windows 10 in the Mix

By Radu Iorga

Huawei debuted the MateBook X Pro at MWC 2018, receiving accolades for the product and appreciation. Now the premium Windows 10 laptop is available at last, priced at $1199. Let’s see what you get for the money.

Huawei Matebook X Pro is priced at $1,199.99 and for that amount it gives you an Intel Core i5-8250U CPU, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of SSD storage and a beautiful metal body. There’s also a webcam here, that has become a bit of a trademark, because it lifts up from a key in the keyboard. Available in Space Gray and Mystic Silver, the device also has a higher end version, priced at $1499.99.

That one jumps up to a Core i7-8550U, 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD storage. There’s also an NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory, an area where I feel that Huawei was skimpy. While the MateBook X was fanless, the Pro gets a fan, because of the extra hardware that generates more heat. The special webcam is a hidden privacy camera, hidden in the keyboard between the F6 and F7 keys.

If you ask me, the 14 inch multitouch screen is the selling point, with very narrow bezels, 3000 x 2000 pixel resolution and an USB Type-A port. There’s even more goodies, like Dolby Atmos acoustics, a fingerprint scanner in the power button and spill proof keyboard. The most amazing thing here is the 4.9 mm thickness (at the slimmest end) and 14.6 mm at the thickest.

It all weighs 1.33 kilograms, lighter than a MacBok Air.

This Evening’s Video Worth Sharing: Full Review of the Huawei P20 Smartphone

By Tim

Tonight’s subject is the P20 Huawei smartphone, not the  P20 Pro model, but the less expensive and still very premium P20 version.

It packs plenty of power, has excellent cameras and great battery life, (better than most flagships).

This one comes to us from Andrew over at AMDTech and is the usual nicely done review!

It does have less RAM than the Pro version, a smaller screen and  an IPS display rather than the AMOLED display of the P20 Pro. However considering that performance is similar and the huge price difference, in my book this one is the better buy!

So let us get right to that video and remember to check out Andrew’s channel on YouTube!

That is all for now, except please subscribe to our channel or click those big donation buttons on the website here!

Another Video Worth Sharing: The Huawei Mate 10 Pro Smartphone 3 Month Review

By Tim

This is a really great smartphone, with flagship specs, great cameras and a great build. Yes, it is far beyond my price range, but still worth talking about!

It covers all the basics and has a huge 4000 mAh battery meaning it can outlast most flagships out there currently.

This one comes to us from Andrew over at AMDTech and is well worth viewing for those who are in the market for a flagship type phone.

He seems to be very positive on this one so just watch the video for all the details!

As usual, make sure to check out the AMDTech channel on YouTube for great, honest reviews.

On to the video!

That is all for now except that usual request to donate to our site and visit our new YouTube channel!

Huawei Honor MagicBook Debuts: 14 inch Ultrabook and Metallic MacBook Rival

By James A.

Huawei’s Honor sub brand came through this week, by unveiling the Honor MagicBook device. This one is an ultrabook, that comes with a 14 inch screen and an 8th gen Intel Core processor. It’s actually pretty compact at 1.47 kilograms and 15.8 mm in thickness.

Borrowing design cues from the MacBook Air and packing an aluminum body, the device is an affordable device that fits a 14 inch panel on a body made for a 13 incher. That screen is an IPS with Full HD resolution and 45% coverage of the NTSC color space. It also offers 800:1 contrast and 250 nits of brightness.

Honor MagicBook relies on an 8th gen Intel processor, either the Core i5-8250u or the Core i7-8550u, whichever you may pick. There’s 8 GB of RAM here, 256 GB of SSD SATA storage and an NVIDIA MX150 dedicated GPU, with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory.

The CPU and GPU both benefit from a singular heat pipe, which sucks the cool air from vents and blows out the hot air. This Honor machine promises up to 12 hours of usage, courtesy of a 57.4 Wh battery, which goes from zero to 70% in just an hour. As far as connectivity is concerned, we get USB Type-C for charging, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, as well as HDMI and audio jack.

Huawei Honor MagicBook uses 4 speakers with Dolby Atmos tech and dual microphones. There’s a fingerprint scanner here, placed to the side of the keyboard and the OS is most likely Windows 10. The starting price is $800 for the Core i5 model and $910 for the Core i7 one.

Huawei May Actually Release Foldable Phone Before Samsung, in November

By James A.

While Samsung and Microsoft have been patenting foldable devices for the best part of the last year, several other companies have started exploring the segment. Among them there’s Huawei, feeling bolder than ever and prepared to launch “the world’s first foldable phone” this November. I expect an IFA 2018 unveiling.

Huawei is no stranger to experiments, having debuted the concept phone Huawei Honor Magic with curved panels and ultra narrow bezels many moons ago. They haven’t yet experimented with foldables, unlike LG, which had two flexible phones under its belt. ZTE Axon has gotten closest to the definition of such a device.

Word through the grapevine says that Huawei is gunning for a November release of its foldable phone. Last we heard Samsung also had it ready for debut, but only in Q1 2019, at the earliest. Apple is also rumored to be working on prototypes, while Microsoft’s Andromeda project is long overdue. Huawei’s version of the foldable machine is said to be inward folding, since the outward one is harder to manufacture.

Specs aren’t clear right now, but they’re likely high end. Hopefully the device looks better than the prototype we saw recently leaking from Taiwan, looking like a beefy e-reader.
