By Radu Iorga

Huawei launched in China today the Honor MediaPad T5, a 10.1 inch Full HD slate priced at $200. It has GPU Turbo support, so it’s going to be great for gaming. The product debuted together with the Honor 8C in China over the past 24 hours. The product is also known as the Honor Tab 5.

There are some differences between the Huawei MediaPad T5 and the Honor MediaPad T5, like the camera specs and fingerprint scanner. The Chinese model has a metal body machined via CNC and it weighs just 460 grams. It measures 7.8 mm in thickness and it’s a pretty good looking machine. Available in Glacier Blue and Grey, the slate packs a 10.1 inch 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

There’s also a set of dual stereo speakers in the mix, with Huawei Histen 5.0 sound tech in the mix and professional tuning from Harman Kardon. This is clearly a device meant for entertainment and fun. It’s got a stereo experience and a large screen with a good res. Inside we find the Kirin 659 CPU, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, plus 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. GPU Turbo is also in the mix for gamers.

A fingerprint sensor and even face unlock are also here, for extra security. There’s also a blue light filter and an option for kids, a sort of children’s corner. Huawei Honor MediaPat T5 is priced at around $200 for the 3 GB RAM/ 32 GB model and $230 for the 4 GB RAM/ 64 GB model. The LTE version goes up to $260. Reservations are already available.

Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite Listed on Official Site With 4 Speakers, Harman Kardon Tuning

By Radu Iorga

Huawei unveiled a bunch of tablets at IFA 2018, including the MediaPad M5 Lite musical powerhouse, with 4 speakers. Now that device has finally been listed on the official Huawei site, meaning it’s one step closer to launch. Let’s check it out.

Even now, one month away from its showcasing in Berlin the product has no price, but I expect something in the range of $300 or $400. The device has a metal shell and it comes with a 10.1 inch 1920 x 1200 pixel display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. It’ll be available in Champagne Gold or Space Gray, for a price that will be revealed later on. The 4 speakers on board have been tuned by Harman Kardon and they’ll probably offer a kickass gaming experience in Asphalt 9.

Android 8.0 Oreo is on board and we’ve got a Kirin 659 CPU, the likes of which you’ve seen on the Huawei P20 Lite. There’s also 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, but you can also get a 4 GB RAM/ 64 GB storage version. Expandable storage of course. A big plus is the support for the M-Pen Lite Stylus, that comes with 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity.

Huawei claims that the stylus will be sold separately or in the box, depending on the region you’re in. One of the selling points may well be the 7500 mAh battery inside, with Quick Charge tech. Aside from the Harman Kardon part, the device also offers support for Huawei’s Histen 5.0 sound system with 3D surround.

Huawei Confirms First Foldable Phone Will Premiere 5G

By Radu Iorga

We’ve been hearing about Huawei’s first foldable phone for a while now, but we didn’t also expect it to be their first 5G phone. Turns out it will, since the company just confirmed this. Huawei confirmed that its foldable handset will also be its first 5G phone.

It’s going to be a 2019 device, of course, as mentioned by the Huawei chairman Ken Hu during the World Economic Forum. We previously knew that Huawei decided to postpone its foldable phone till 2019, after a bunch of teasers for a 2018 release. Samsung seems to have the upper hand, since it promised to unveil details about its first foldable phone in November.

Huawei also teased a foldable during IFA 2018 earlier this month, promising its device will replace computers basically. 5G phones should appear in the second half of 2019, as partial 4G rollout starts then in the big cities all over the world. 2020 will bring the mainstream 5G rollout. The technology requires more battery life and different antenna arrays.

Motorola already has a phone out with 5G, the Moto Z3, but it requires a Verizon Moto Mod module attached for that. It’s not very clear if Samsung’s foldable phone also has 5G or not, but we’ll learn more in November.

Huawei CEO Believes Foldable Phones Could Replace PCs

By James A.

Chalk this one under “teaser”, as Huawei CEO Richard Yu made a claim about the future of smartphones and also PCs. Turns out that he believes foldable phones are going to replace PCs in the future. In the words of famous rapper MGB, “let’s talk about it”…

The first foldable smartphone of 2018 has yet to hit the mainstream and it seems that Samsung and Huawei are letting each other be the first to bite. Yu sees a foldable as a PC replacement and in some regards he’s right. A tablet is also a PC, well kinda and a big screen smartphone that folds definitely replaces a 7 inch or 8 inch slate. The claim is that people are only using computers because they find the smartphone display too small.

In the future the foldables will fix that need for a bigger screen. Looking at recent diagonals, we see Huawei evolving a lot. They’ve got the 7.1 inch Honor 8X Max and also the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is going to have a 6.9 inch diagonal. The upcoming foldables get even bigger, but once they’re folded that diagonal is cut in two. The ideal format resembles the one of a wallet, while the vertical clamshell-style one seems reserved by Samsung.

Microsoft seems to have backed out and thrown the towel for its foldable. I have a feeling that the first attempt may come from China, rather than South Korea. Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, ZTE are also looking into it, plus Lenovo. As far as PC replacement goes, Huawei already has a sort of Desktop replacement, by hooking up its phones to a monitor with USB Type-C and also mouse and keyboard.

A foldable may expand the idea further.
