iPad Mini 5 Gets Bend Test, of Course Flexes in Front of Camera (Video)

By Radu Iorga

The iPad Mini 5 and iPad Air 2019 have both been subjects of teardowns recently, revealing a very low repairability score, but are they resilient? JerryRigEverything set out to test that, via his usual bend test. Let’s see what came out of that after the break.

The YouTuber already did a similar test with the 11 inch iPad Pro, which was pretty easy to bend and break. Meanwhile, the new iPad Mini 2019/ iPad Mini 5 was put through a series of tests. First, it was the scratch test, with the display scratching at the typical level 6 out of 9, like any other non sapphire smartphone out there.

The body is made of aluminum and takes the unibody approach, while the screen burn with the lighter didn’t cause permanent damage. That’s on account of having a LCD display, not an OLED one. The bend test was the key moment, with the device flexing quite a bit, like the iPad Pro 11. The difference is that this model is able to stay functional and it doesn’t have a screen crack or frame crack. Even when severely bent it keeps working.

That means it’s not a good idea to keep in your baggy pant pockets, in a jacket or even the schoolbag or bag without a case. Still waiting on those performance and battery life tests…

iPad Mini 5 Teardown Shows Low Repairability, Components from Older iPads

By Radu Iorga

The iPad Mini 5 started shipping to customers over the past weekend and we’re expecting the first reviews to pop up any minute now. There should also be the occasional bend test and there’s already a teardown here, courtesy of iFixit. The device is proving very hard to repair, albeit not as hard as the AirPods 2, which have been deemed impossible to fix.

Turns out that the new iPad Mini isn’t exactly hugely different from its predecessor, since it looks pretty much the same. It also feels a bit like a small iPad Air and includes components from previous iPads. It’s been 4 years since the last iPad Mini and we thought a new one wouldn’t happen. The iFixit team has opened the machine to find inside a 19.32 Wh battery, which is the same capacity as the iPad Mini4 battery.

There’s also novelty, like the 7 megapixel F/2.2 camera, borrowed from the 10.5 inch iPad Pro. That’s quite the upgrade from the previous smaller iPad. Then we find the Apple A12 CPU inside, which still keeps the iPhone XS and XS Max on top of the benchmark lists. A new microphone array has been moved near the selfie cam and there are also new ambient light sensors that support the True Tone feature, adjusting the white balance of the screen based on the surrounding light.

The repairability score is 2 out of 10, because there’s a ton of adhesive, particularly for the battery part. Still, the good news is that you only need a single Philips screwdriver to pop up the screws. The battery replacement is very hard, there’s adhesive everywhere and removing the Home button is quite hard, in order to replace the screen. Adhesive also holds cables and parts into place, making things harder.

Apple iPad Mini 5 May Come With No Design Changes, But Powerful CPU

By Radu Iorga

Here we are again, with some leaks related to the iPad Mini 5. Turns out that the device will have very small to none cosmetic changes, but also powerful hardware. Let’s see what’s new.

It’s been more than 3 years since the last iPad Mini came, the iPad Mini 4, so we’re long overdue an upgrade. Apple has been reported a bunch of times to have prepared a follow-up, potentially together with a 10 inch educational iPad. The iPad Mini 5 info is now being provided by Japanese blog Macotakara. They’re a pretty reliable source, that now claims that the product will have many things in common with the iPad Mini 4, starting with the audio jack, Touch ID fingerprint scanner and Lightning port.

No USB Type-C port or Face ID, it seems. Even the overall dimensions and large bezels are unchanged. Apple decided against Face ID and slim bezels, because it would have pushed the price of the device to a way too high range. People are expecting the iPad Mini 5 to start at less than the $329 price tag of the 9.7 inch iPad (2018).

The iPad Mini 4 is still being sold for $399 in the 128 GB version, in the meantime. The CPU is said to be an Apple A10 or A10X for the iPad Mini 5, plus enough RAM, something like 3 GB of maybe even 4. I think that the Apple A10 and 3 GB of RAM are enough. If this is priced anywhere below $300, it’s actually worth the buy. Apple Pencil compatibility is still in the cards.

Entry Level iPad of 2019, iPad Mini 5 May Come Without Face ID, According to iOS 12.2

By Radu Iorga

Fresh hints about the future education/entry level/affordable iPad of 2019 have popped up and they’re telling us that there’s no trace of Face ID this time. The iPad Mini 5 also won’t get it, apparently. The clues were found in the iOS 12.2 beta code.

Face ID involves the expensive TrueDepth mechanism, which may bump up the prices of the devices too much. Since there’s no Face ID, Touch ID is probably here to stay, together with the big bezel at the bottom, aka the chin. Interestingly, rumors also came up about a refreshed iPod model, that will get no Face ID or Touch ID.

The clues in iOS 12.2 beta were found by developer Steve Troughton-Smith, who posted a screenshot to Twitter, showing the references to the new iPad models, both with cellular and WiFi-only connectivity. These models are codenamed iPad11,1, iPad11,2, iPad 11,3 and iPad 11,4. At the same time, The Eurasian Economic Commission from Russia approved six new filings for future iPads.

These are the A2123, A2124, A2133, A2152 A2153 and A2154. Tablets are expected in early 2019, Q1 probably. iPad Mini 4 was launched as early as September 2015, which was 4 years ago, so it seemed like a dead series. The iPad Mini 5 is also said to have a dual camera module, but I wouldn’t bet on that. Apple Pencil support also seems like a given now.

Meanwhile the affordable education iPad may come with a 10 inch screen in the frame of a 9.7 incher.

Apple iPad Mini 5 Rumored to Debut in First Half of 2019, With New Entry Level iPad

By Radu Iorga

It’s been 4 years since the last iPad mini was released, the iPad Mini 4 and we’ve only started seeing a resurgence of rumors about a successor recently. We saw cases for the iPad Mini 5, some timid renders and the idea is that it’ll look the same as the predecessor. Today we learn more about it and another new slate from Apple.

Turns out that the Cupertino giant is getting ready to release a new iPad Mini in the first half of 2019, together with an entry level iPad. The source of the info is Digitimes, which has been a bit hit and miss over the past years. Their advantage is that they’re working with component suppliers though. The iPad Mini 5 is said to have the same unibody metal design with rounded sides as before and pretty much the same size.

No trace of narrow bezels, Face ID or other novelty. Perhaps we’ll get an Apple A12 CPU and the USB Type-C port, that has been included at the bottom of the latest iPad Pro models. The entry level model, which had a 9.7 inch screen in 2018 may switch to 10 inches in 2019 and get narrower bezels, plus the same Apple Pencil support.

A refresh will bring a new CPU, new USB port, maybe extra speakers. We could learn more around March time or at WWDC 2019 at the latest. Educational discounts are expected.
