Global Tablet, PC and Smartphone Sales Expected to Stabilize in 2019

By Radu Iorga

A new report is out, showing predictions for the global tablet, PC and smartphone sales in 2019. All of them are expected to stabilize this year, with around 2.21 billion personal computer, tablet and smartphone devices sold worldwide in 2019, according to Gartner.

The number is a slight increase of 0.5% compared to 2018. The trend should also stay rather tablet till 2021. 2019 is also a year for smartphone drops, actually the third consecutive year of drops. Garnet expects 1.802 billion phones to be sold, compared to the 1.811 billion of 2018 (a 0.5% drop). A recovery will be felt in 2020, with a 1.2% increase, while in 2021 there will be a drop of 1.4%.

Tablets are also expected to be on a decline, with the 149.5 million units from 2018 turning into 143.7 million in 2021. PCs will follow the same pattern and go from 259.7 million machines sold in 2018 to 254.9 million in 2021. The premium computers sector will remain dynamic, with a growth of 23.8% over the next 3 years.

The total sales number are expected to be stable around 2.2 billion units over the next few years. As reported here, foldables will stay a niche till 2023, while laptops may just make a comeback, thanks to the gaming segment most of all.

Huawei CEO Believes Foldable Phones Could Replace PCs

By James A.

Chalk this one under “teaser”, as Huawei CEO Richard Yu made a claim about the future of smartphones and also PCs. Turns out that he believes foldable phones are going to replace PCs in the future. In the words of famous rapper MGB, “let’s talk about it”…

The first foldable smartphone of 2018 has yet to hit the mainstream and it seems that Samsung and Huawei are letting each other be the first to bite. Yu sees a foldable as a PC replacement and in some regards he’s right. A tablet is also a PC, well kinda and a big screen smartphone that folds definitely replaces a 7 inch or 8 inch slate. The claim is that people are only using computers because they find the smartphone display too small.

In the future the foldables will fix that need for a bigger screen. Looking at recent diagonals, we see Huawei evolving a lot. They’ve got the 7.1 inch Honor 8X Max and also the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is going to have a 6.9 inch diagonal. The upcoming foldables get even bigger, but once they’re folded that diagonal is cut in two. The ideal format resembles the one of a wallet, while the vertical clamshell-style one seems reserved by Samsung.

Microsoft seems to have backed out and thrown the towel for its foldable. I have a feeling that the first attempt may come from China, rather than South Korea. Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, ZTE are also looking into it, plus Lenovo. As far as PC replacement goes, Huawei already has a sort of Desktop replacement, by hooking up its phones to a monitor with USB Type-C and also mouse and keyboard.

A foldable may expand the idea further.

Looking For a SFF-PC Running Windows 10? This Lenovo May Be the Answer!

The folks over at Refurbees are offering up a very nice Small Form Factor-PC, with Windows 10 and 2gb ram. You can even choose to upgrade the order for a few extra bucks. But if you are stuck with an old PC and just want to get onto Windows 10 you simply can’t beat the price of  $85!

For that you get a decent 2gb ram/160gb Hard drive PC that will certainly get you out of the dark ages of XP or Vista. It is perfect for those who already have a monitor since the mouse and keyboard are included.  Just plug those in and then plug in your monitor and you could be running Win 10 for less than the price of the Windows 10 software itself

Sure it is refurbished, but it does come with a guarantee and reasonable specs for day to day use. That is generally better than buying a PC from some dude selling it on LetGo or Craigslist.

The Lenovo site has all the specs for this series right here.

Refurbees is only guaranteeing delivery before Christmas if you order by December 12th, so get over there and order one today.

Tim Cook Expects Many Consumers to Never Buy a Computer Anymore, Because of Tablets; Let’s See What Researchers and Analysts Think!

By James A.

Tim Cook, Apple’s classy CEO recently gave an interview to BuzzFeed, in which he discussed the future of tablets. The Apple official claimed that some consumers will never buy a desktop computer and also said that he sees the tablets and smartphones as the future of accessing Internet.

He’s probably talking about the average consumer, who only needs to check his Facebook account, send some mails and stream some movies. However, when work is involved, a PC may be required. Tim Cook is however not alone in his thinking, as Tim Bajarin, president of tech research firm Creative Strategies said that there are people who use the iPad as their main computer and it suits them fine.

Of course, if we’re talking about a 2 in 1 device or the Microsoft Surface, those can easily replace a laptop for example. The iPad Pro is also aimed at doing that, especially with the stylus and keyboard in the mix. Still, tablet sales have started declining, as the market has become saturated with this type of product. One segment where slates are growing is the working environment, though…

Forrester Research expects that 20% of the total tablet market will be owned by the business segment by 2018, with Apple, Google and Microsoft battling it out for market share. Analysts are cautious and claim that the laptop and desktop aren’t going away anytime soon, since they still have the upper hand in developing markets and a huge installed base in corporations.

PC shipments are expected to fall by 8.7% in 2015 and more in 2016, but they will stabilize in 2017.
