Google Developing AltOS Mode for PixelBook; Here’s Proof

By Radu Iorga

The Google Pixelbook may not have been selling exactly like hot cakes, but it’s got one thing going for it: the ability to experiment. The flagship Chrome OS machine has been getting action from Android, Play Store, Fuchsia and probably even Andromeda in experimental fashion. Now it’s ready to get a so called “AltOS” mode.

It’s not very clear what this mode does, but there’s a chance it’ll let people do some dual boot action on the device. Imagine booting another OS other than Chrome OS on the machine, how cool is that? It may also just be a mode to let developers boot more easily into Fuchsia OS, Google’s OS that’s under development right now. The commit comments show that “go/vboot-windows” is mentioned, so we may also get Windows as an option on the Pixelbook, natively even.

The PixelBook was by no means a bad machine, but the high price was the problem with it. It’s more than capable of running Windows or whatever other OS you throw at it. Now if only Google figured out a way to alternate between Chrome OS and the other platform faster and more efficient than those dual boot Android/Windows tablets out there… Those take even minutes to switch between OSes.

I still have my money on Fuchsia though.

Google Debuts Pixelbook Sleeve on the Down Low; New Pen Nibs Coming

By Radu Iorga

Sometimes Google just doesn’t want to make a big fuss out of its product debuts or announcements and thus there are new accessories incoming that you may not know about. We’re talking about the brand new Google Pixelbook sleeve and a bunch of nibs for the stylus associated to that device.

There have already been some other sleeves from companies like Bellroy, but this one comes from Google itself. The sleeve will hold both the Pixelbook and its Pen and it’s built from a premium layered microfiber, with a heathered finish, in order to match other Google devices and products, like the Pixel Buds’s case. This case also has a flap that closes with magnets, sealing the device inside.

Sadly we don’t have a release date for the product, or a price tag. Google in the meantime also added Pixelbook Pen Replacement Tips in the Google Store. Most of the styli out there are prone to tip breakage, that’s why companies like Samsung and other such names provide replacement tips. Somehow, Google didn’t do that with the PixelBook Pen. Now the big G is offering a 3 pack of nibs in the Google Store.

Spending $15 gives you a set of three, but these ones also don’t have a clear release date. Just as a quick recap, the Pixelbook is a Chrome OS laptop priced at $999. It’s got a Core i5 CPU, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage.

Google Pixelbook Ready to Offer Split Screen Multitasking in Tablet Mode

By Radu Iorga

Google’s Pixelbook convertible tablet is about to get even more useful, by receiving an update that offers it split screen multitasking in tablet mode. The $1000 product runs on Chrome OS and has been getting a few updates lately.

One of the main complaints about the product was its inability to do real multitasking in tablet mode. Now, thanks to the updated Chrome OS 64, things are about to get comfier. The new feature has been discovered by Chrome OS fan and code digger Francois Beaufort. Split View multitasking can now be enabled in tablet mode by enabling a flag from the Dev Channel for Chrome OS.

The flag is under the “chrome://flags/#enable-tablet-splitview” area and once you turn it on you will be able to tap on the overview icon and find out which windows are open, plus move them to either side and snap them in place. You can also run two tabs of Chrome on the display at the same time. Split View actually only works with the Chrome browser for now, so don’t expect to run two Android apps side by side on the Pixelbook just yet.

We don’t have a timeline for the arrival of the feature and I mean without having to mess about with developer flags, but I expect that to happen before the month is out.

Google Has Apparently Placed Orders for a Detachable Pixelbook

By Radu Iorga

Google is expanding its format variety for the recently announced Pixelbook and it would appear that this time they’re going with with a detachable model. The device already had a 360 degree foldable touchscreen, but you couldn’t take it apart.

Sources from the supply chain are now mentioning a version made by Quanta Computer that will allow this detachment. Quanta has declined to comment on the orders or clients. Google debuted the Pixelbook last week, with the Pixel 2 phones and it should hit the market soon. The whole idea of a Chromebook Pixel came to life in 2013 and the second generation arrived in 2015.

Google has been working in the meantime with brand vendors like Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and Samsung to make a big push for the Chromebooks in the education segment. They have succeeded, judging by the simple fact that 58% of mobile devices in the K12 education sector ran Chrome OS in 2016. Windows had a 22% share and iOS 14%. Lately though, Chromebooks have been getting pricier and better specced, although not exactly on par with Windows 10 models.

We now learn that Google may be paying Quanta to make a detachable Pixelbook with a 12 inch touchscreen. It’s not yet clear if it will keep the specs or not, but we may expect a midrange or even entry level version of it, as Google itself has teased.

Google Pixelbook Leaks, Seems Like a High End Chromebook; Stylus included

By Radu Iorga

Google has a major event scheduled for October 4th, where they’ll unveil the new Pixel 2 phones. It appears they will also bring a new Pixelbook laptop, that has just leaked via the pics below. We also have details about the product below.

This Chromebook is known as the Pixelbook and it’s going to come in 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB storage flavors. The prices are $1199, $1399 and $1749 respectively. The bulk of the devices’ details isn’t known yet, but we’ve heard that it will fold into a tablet device.

Google will also offer a Pixelbook Pen, a $99 stylus with lots of pressure levels. Tilt support is also here. Google has already launched two Pixel-branded Chromebook laptops in 2013 and 2015, but none in 2016. They will be high priced models, that will rival the Surface Pro and iPad Pro.

The stylus seems rather Apple Pencil-inspired, being a bit more massive than usual and it has its own button. The way the screen hooks to the keyboard is rather bizarre in format, but not atypical for Google. I wonder who the OEM is, but my bet is Huawei.
