Okay as much as I try to Ignore Xmas…here is a cool plugin that I have tested.

1-WFS-Let_it_snowI do NOT like Xmas…I do not like treating people nicely because the calendar says I must and I especially don’t like giving my money away…because that cash is MINE….but….

I do give gifts and spend at least a dollar or 2 here and there…so in the spirit of Xmas stupidity my recommendation for the best snowfall plugin is…..wait for it!…….and it is….

WFS Let It Snow Plugin v2.0.0

and there ya go….so if you have a WordPress site and want to make folks think that you care about the spirit of the season more than the spirits and the football…add this to you site!

Car Demons Plugin Review

Question-MarkSo lately I have been using one of the test sites here to test out a nifty plugin that I was interested in. It is called Car Demons and is a very nice, well written plugin that I talked about in a previous post on the yourfreewordpress site.

There is great support and there are a few glitches. The basic concept is great! But…and there are the usual “buts” here. You do need to be quite the WP Guru to use it and even after hashing out the issues I had at first,  that involved not having the mod-rewrite module loaded in Apache, I still have one single HUGE issue.

That “huge” issue is the cars display fine but the damned prices don’t! Let’s face it folks, when people are “shopping” for a car, what the hell is their main priority? Yeah, price! I can get past the fact that the writer of the plugin uses some funky language to describe certain features, such as Anti-Brake? Yeah, that would be anti-lock brakes, at least here in the USA. And featuring Tire pressure Monitoring as a feature? Well, it has been mandatory here since 2008. But those minor issues aside, the price thing is just bugging the hell out of me!

So once again I am asking for a wee bit of help here.  Go on over to yfwp3.yourfreewordpress.com and login as yfwp3 with a password of…yfwp3 and proceed to the fixing!  Do whatever it takes. This is a dev site, so if you break it totally it is a simple matter of re-uploading a few files and starting again. Have at it folks!

Review: Velvet Blues Update URLs Plugin

Velvet_Blues_pluginThis is a nice handy plugin for anyone moving their website to a new server or domain, (As I just did this morning). It is extremely simple to use and it gets the job done.

If you have never moved your site between domains or servers you may not realize what a pain in the ass it can be to get all your images/links working again.

This super handy plugin takes care of that for you and is worthy of at least a rating of 10 outta 10 on Tim’s scale of cool stuff!

You can find this handy dandy little jewel right here.

Review: Contextual Related Posts Plugin

context_related_postsI recently installed the Contextual Related Posts Plugin to test it out and am happy to report that it works just fine on my little Android based server here. The install went fine and the plugin is very easy to set up.

If you look at the links at the end of this article you will see the results of the plugin’s magic.  It’s a simple idea, but a great one, since it tends to keep your visitors on your site. It looks through your posts to compare words and produce a listing , with or without images, of posts on your site that are related.   You can control how many items it will display. So if you only wish to select a few or many, you can easily change the output.

The number of words searched and the output is completely editable. All in all I would give this plugin a rating of 5 stars, because it does exactly what it is supposed to do.

Review: UpdraftPlus Backup Plugin for WordPress

Updraft_logo1For those who have frequented this site a few times you will already be aware that occasionally my poor little Asus Memo Pad HD7 allows my database to go to hell in a handcart. Requiring me to learn how to either fix a database or restore one from a previous backup.

Bottom line is that you do need to run backups so I now have a routine for doing just that, but a one click backup is certainly easier and faster than copying all my main files and then exporting and saving a database.

So today I installed a very nice plugin called Updraft Plus Backup. It does all that stuff for you and it will upload to a variety of locations including Google drive.  It is extremely easy to use in it’s most basic form and you can have a full backup in just a few minutes. The downsides are for those non-experts or simply lazy folks who can’t navigate the Google API stuff or do no have a cloud server available to store data on. For those folks you will have to run a back-up and then manually upload to a storage spot of your choice. A short update here (09/27/14), after getting myself a Dropbox account I now can report that using the automatic uploads feature works quite nicely, so the scores for this plugin are hereby raised a bit.

The upside of course is that in most cases, unless your server crashes completely and all data is lost, you will be able to recover it all and restore your site. I have set mine to auto-backup every 2 weeks but I will still run my manual backups in between. Below you will find a few screenshots of the app as it appears on my tablet server.

Over all I am going to give this plugin a score of 4.5 and that is only because of the complexity, for the average blog owner, of the uploads feature.  I still highly recommend this plugin.
