Microsoft Surface Book 2 Entry Level Version Now Available on More Markets

By Radu Iorga

In case you didn’t know there are also entry level versions of the Microsoft Surface Book 2. Those have started being available on more and more markets and the price of $1623 is being thrown around. Let’s see what the deal is.

Up until now you co go into the $2000s with an Intel Core i5 model outside the US, but now Microsoft is selling the entry level Surface Book 2 for just $1623 for a limited time. That applies to UK, Germany and France for example. The difference between this model and the $2118 model is the storage first and foremost. The entry level Surface Book 2 has just 128 GB of internal storage, comoared to the 256 GB of the $2000+ unit.

The Core i5 CPU is in the mix, of course, but there’s no dedicated GPU, so you may reconsider and maybe get a higher end Surface Pro or Surface Laptop. For those of you not familiar with the device’s versions, it comes in 13.5 inch and 15 inch diagonals, with British QWERTY, French Azerty and German Qwertz keyboards. There are Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs inside and 8 or 16 GB of RAM.

Storage can go as high as 1 TB. If you ask me what I like about this product, it’s got to be that revolutionary hinge.

Tonight’s Video Worth Sharing: The Microsoft Surface Book 2 15 Inch 2 in 1 Notebook

By Tim

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is technically a tablet and a notebook, but at 15 inches, it isn’t exactly a handy to hold device, but it is surprisingly good. The video we have tonight is from Andrew over at AMDTech and is a full review of the Surface Book 2.

Of course this device has one huge downside and that is the astronomical price tag, but let us face facts folks, if you need a ton of processing power and like to do video editing and absolutely need to be able to draw on the screen with a stylus, well…yeah, it is certainly worth it.

We are looking at an 8th gen, Core i7 processor and an Nvdia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU. Yeah, lots of muscle here!

The display is outstanding, the web cam is great and there just isn’t a lot one can say that is a big negative. Battery life is good, the keyboard and track pad are great.

Sure, I have zero need for one of these myself, but there are folks who visit this site that might want to know all about this device, so I am going to quit typing and get you folks right to that video!

That is all for right now, as usual check out our donations link if you find this site the least bit useful,

Tim

Microsoft Surface Book 2 15 Inch Version Now Available Internationally

By Radu Iorga

Microsoft Surface Book 2 debuted last October and it was available in pretty limited fashion till now. Today we learn that the laptop is ready to expand beyond the USA, in official fashion. Apparently all the markets that have Surface products will get the Surface Book 2 from April.

Interestingly, the 13 inch Surface Book 2 was already available worldwide, but not the 15 inch one, which should be ready for an expansion by April. The new list includes countries like Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and UK, plus a few more. Preorders are live today for the 15 inch Surface Book 2.

Starting with February and then through March and April the 13 inch and 15 inch configs of the Surface Book 2 will expand to places like Bahrain, China, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Portugal, Qatar, Spain and more. Prices will of course vary and depend on the region, starting at $1499 in USA for a 13.5 inch laptop with integrated graphics and the 7th gen Intel Core i5 chipset.

Add a newer CPU and you pay a $500 premium for that. GTX 1060 packing models will cost $2500 and up, plus extra RAM adds to the price. Nice to see Microsoft going worldwide with its quality laptops.

Let’s just hope they fixed the battery drain problem.

Microsoft Updates Surface Book 2 With Fresh Drivers and Firmware, Including Fall Creator Update Software

By Radu Iorga

The Surface Book 2 is still a relatively new product on the market, one that was shipped over the past month or so. It came with the Creators Update for many people, so they had to spend quite some time performing the update to Fall Creators Update. Microsoft wants to fix that, with the aid of a new Firmware and Driver update, that tweaks the device to the Fall Creators Update needs.

Aside from the update, it also comes with Windows Mixed Reality support and the usual performance and stability tweaks. The official changelog is detailed below and basically has to do with system stability more than anything:

  • Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 (v22.20.16.4840) improves system stability
  • Surface Dial Filter (v1.19.136.0) improves system stability
  • Surface DTX (v2.27.136.0) improves system stability
  • Surface Integration (v4.6.136.0) improves system stability
  • Surface Ucsi Device (v2.14.136.0) improves system stability
  • Surface UEFI (v387.1879.769.0) improves system stability

There’s a separate changelog for devices already updated to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. It implements NVIDIA GTX 1050 and 1060 support for Windows Mixed Reality and more drivers. Those looking to trigger the update need to go to Settings>Update & Security> Windows Update> Check for updates.

Keep in mind we’re talking about two versions of updates here, one for the Surface Book 2 that has Windows 10 Creators Update and the other for the newer software version.

Microsoft Surface Book 2 Power Problem Confirmed, Battery Drain is Serious in High End Tasks

By Radu Iorga

We wrote about the availability of the Microsoft Surface Book 2 just a few days ago and already there are problems with it. It’s no wonder Consumer Reports couldn’t quite recommend the machine yet. Anyway, the fresh problem has to do with the device’s power, or better said the battery drain.

It was actually found during The Verge’s review of the product from last week. They discovered that the laptop is plagued by serious battery drain during strenous tasks like gaming or GPU usage. If you plug it into the supplied charger, the battery on the base of the machine drains during several games, if the power settings are set to max performance in order to fully use the power of the hardware.

Surface Book 2 was meant to offer a lot of power on the go, so developers, designers and professionals will surely use it to the max, with the risk of draining the battery fast and completely. Microsoft explains via a spokesperson that there’s a Power Mode Slider here, which offers the user control over the performance and battery life. In some of the intense and prolonged gaming scenarios, if you set the Power Mode Slider to “best performance” the battery may end up discharging even when the device is connected to the power supply, it seems.

Though, full drainage doesn’t happen, thanks to power management design. The amount of percentage you lose varies from game to game, app to app, screen resolution settings and max load on the GPU. The Verge did highlight that they had a defective power supply unit on their test model, so they’ll be back with more input after they look into it. What’s clear is that the Surface Book 2 is designed to supply 95 watts of power from the charger of the device, which is not enough to run the CPU, graphics card and all the other hardware at the max level.

Sudden bursts of usage may raise things to 35 watts consumption and much more. Even 120 watt was mentioned in tests. The NVIDIA GTX 1060 is quite hungry, with a drain of 70 or 80 watts itself, so the peak goes to 105 watts. Maybe a heavy power brick with an extra fast and high wattage charge would have been a good idea…
