New Driver Update for Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Offers On Screen Support for Surface Dial

By Radu Iorga

One more important device from Microsoft has received a major update this week, the Surface Pro 4. Microsoft Surface Pro 4 has on screen support for the Surface Dial, the famous round and rotating device that lets you interact with graphics and editing software better.

There are new drivers available for the Surface Pro 4, which activate the on screen support for the Surface Dial and improve the touch accuracy. Once the update is installed, you can place the Surface Dial directly on the screen and interact with a color picker or ruler, which will appear on the display. New drivers have been offered for Surface Dial Detection, Surface Dial Filter, Surface Digitizer Integration, Surface touch and Surface Touch Servicing ML.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is a fourth generation Surface product, launched 3 years ago. It’s got a Skylake CPU, more RAM and SSD than the predecessor and it comes with a 12.3 inch screen with higher resolution. Right now if you access the Microsoft Store, you will see the device is out of stock. Other retailers may have it, starting at $700, with 128 GB of storage and Core m3 CPU (no pen).

You can perform the download yourself through Windows Update or from the Surface Pro 4 Drivers and Firmware page.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Faces Flickering Screen Issues, Putting It on Ice Helps

By Radu Iorga

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 hasn’t been in the news for a while now, but it’s back thanks to some bad press. It would appear that the device is experiencing some flickering screen issues, which can be solved by putting the device on ice. Let’s see how.

This is by no means a new defect, since hundreds of users have complained on the Microsoft support thread over the past year regarding the flickering display on the 2 in 1 machine. The Surface Book also had similar issues after its debut in 2015. Microsoft did fix the problem in that case, but this time it’ll be tougher to do so. It appears to be a hardware problem and not a software one for the Surface Pro 4.

It’s a classic case of overheating and some users have resorted to placing the tablet in boxes with bags of ice. Affected users have come up with their own website, which showcases the problem. It’s already being called “flickergate” and a potential fix is placing the slate in the freezer. It’s only a temporary fix, as the flicker comes back afterwards.

The problem is that it’s been a while since the device launched and most such models are out of warranty. Some users even ended up paying as much as $800 to Microsoft for an out of warranty exchange program to fix this. A bigger problem is that the Surface models are famously hard to repair, so things are not looking good. We’ve written about Surface problems before, but we thought those were gone in the modern day. Apparently not, so Consumer Reports was on to something.

Fresh Surface Pro 4 Firmware Update Brings Support for New Type Cover

By Radu Iorga

Even if Windows Phone 8.1 got killed the other day, Microsoft isn’t stopping the updates for its other better selling products. Thus the last gen Surface Pro 4 just got updated with fresh firmware, that brings official support for the latest Type Covers to it.

We’re talking about the new Type Cover and Signature Type Cover that were launched together with the Surface Pro 2017. People may have already realized those are compatible with the Surface Pro 4, simply by trying them on. The new firmware update increases reliability and compatibility, offering the device official support for Type Covers.

Surface Keyboard 1.1.504.0 update activates the feature and it’s rolling out right now officially. You can also download it from here, if you like the manual way. No trace of a Surface Pro 3 update, but in any case the new covers should work with it without a hassle. This is basically Microsoft just making sure they cover all bases, since the accessory works anyway, but latency and reliability is ensured with the firmware.

An update should come in the future to bring extra support for the new Surface Pen, with its impressive sensitivity levels. The latest Signature Type Cover comes in 3 new colors and the new Type Cover weighs 310 grams. It’s covered in alcantara and has mechanical keys with 1.3 mm travel.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Claimed to Have One of the Best Tablet Displays Ever, According to Experts

By James A.

microsoft-surface-pro-4-news-0016-1260x840-1260x840

It appears that the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 has a kickass display, a feat confirmed by the latest tests from authorities in the field. The device comes with a 12.3 inch screen with a resolution of 2736 x 1824 pixels and its tests showed record breaking numbers, according to display expert Ray Soneira.

The device even upgrades the performance of the screen on the Surface Pro 3, by quite a bit actually. Surface Pro 4 comes with the most accurate color reproduction on a tablet display ever measured till now. As an extra, the very same screen uses little power, requiring just 4.8 watts to mode those 267 pixels per inch on a 69.8 square inch screen area.

This means that it uses 57.8% of the power that an iPad Air 2 requires to move pixels around, on a smaller space and resolution. Surface Pro 4 also upgrades the already good feats of the Pro 3, increasing maximum brightness, contrast ratio, absolute color accuracy, view angle performance and adding a lower screen reflectance in the mix.

Soneira found that the Pro 4 brightness is 436 nits, but the black luminance is 0.31 nits and the true contrast ratio is 1406. Those are excellent numbers for any device, but let’s see how the iPad Pro performs before judging further.

By Alex Wilhelm

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Type Cover Detail

With the Surface Pro 4, Microsoft has taken something that worked — the Surface Pro 3 — and made it better. That’s it. Review over. You can go outside now and dance. Still here?
