iPad Drops to Second Place in Tablet Shipments in Western Europe, Samsung Claims First Spot

By James A.

It appears that the iPad’s consecutive quarters of shipment drops are having some effects on the Western European market. According to market analysis firm IDC, the Cupertino firm dropped to second place in tablet shipments in Western Europe. Samsung is now first.

The whole tablet segment contracted by 1.7% compared to last year and 7.1 million units were moved. Android units dominated the field and Samsung was the biggest OEM of them all. They posted growth and pushed the iPad to second place. Sammy moved 1.89 million slates in Q1 this year, compared to the 1.6 million from last year. They have a share of 26.5% of the tablet market in Western Europe, standing for a 17.9% year on year growth.

Meanwhile, Apple shipped 1.54 million iPad units, down from the 1.74 million last year. They have a 21.7% quota of the market in Western Europe, a 11.5% decline from last year. Interestingly, there’s still an area where they dominate, as the firm accounts for 50% of all tablets priced above 600 euros. I’m guessing the Surface models also fare well in that area.

For those wondering, in IDC’s top Lenovo was third, Acer fourth and ASUS fifth.

Samsung Tablet Shipments in Q4 2016 Register Double Digit Decline

By Radu Iorga

The tablet market has been dropping seriously ever since 2014, with the core factors being the ascension of big screen smartphones and the fact that everyone has a tablet now. Apple has been hurt by this, but Samsung too, as proved by the recent tablet shipment figures published online.

As global tablet shipments fell 9% in Q4 last year, Samsung itself was hurt in the double digit margin. The info comes from Strategy Analytics and shows us that Samsung shipped 8.1 million units over the last 3 months of the year 2016, down from the 9 million of the Q4 2015. This means that Sammy registered a 10% decline and went from a 12.9% market share to a 12.8% share.

Apple dropped by 19%, so they’re doing worse, going from 16.1 million units to 13.1 million. Not everybody’s doing so bad, because Amazon, Lenovo and Huawei had big shipment increases. They range from 21% to 49%, with Huawei being the biggest grower. Samsung is ready to bounce back, as they’re preparing the Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy TabPro S2 for a MWC 2017 unveiling.

By Radu Iorga

IDC revealed the stats for tablet shipments in Japan over the last quarter and the figures don’t exactly surprise us. As the whole tablet market shipped around 179 million units, 1.35 million commercial models came from Japan, a decrease of 15.2% from last year.

Apparently the business segment saw 440,000 units moved, a decrease of 12.9% from last year. The devices intended for schools and education increased by 17.9%. Apple stands dominant in Japan, with a 41.1% share, followed by Huawei, with 23.3% and Fujitsu, at 10.6%. Lenovo is fourth and then ASUS, with 7.1% and 5.8% respectively.

Apple has maintained position for the past year, while Huawei has grown in significant manner, by 43% even. Fujitsu managed to rack up more shipments in the education area. Detachables played a big part on the tablet market, although we don’t have the shares for mobile OSes to see if Microsoft got the benefit of the detachable sales.
