Today’s First Video Worth Sharing: The Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop

By Tim

Today we have a video from Chris over at TechTablets on the Xiaomi Mi Gaming laptop. This is a solid gaming laptop, but has a serious flaw when it comes to the keyboard. It also happens to be quite expensive at roughly  $1280 currently for the config tested in the review.

It is available with an Nvdia GTX 1050 or GTX 1060 GPU. Thermals are not an issue at all, but fan noise is rather high and the choice by Xiaomi to add some macro buttons in a poor area of the keyboard  makes for some issues.

Those issues aside, as far as game performance goes, this is a very solid performer.

So all that being said, make sure to visit the TechTablets YouTube channel and subscribe if you want to see a wide variety of tech items tested and reviewed. Now let us proceed to show you that promised video!

As usual make sure to check out our new YouTube channel for the occasional video worth watching!

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 May be the First Xiaomi Tablet Powered by a Qualcomm CPU

By Radu Iorga

Turns out that Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi Pad 4 tablet may just end up like the first Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered slate from Xiaomi. We’ve heard some recent rumors about the device being in the planning process, but nothing more than that. Up until now 3 types of chipsets were used.

The first gen Xiaomi Mi Pad had an NVIDIA Tegra, then the Mi Pad 2 had an Intel Atom and the Mi Pad 3 a MediaTek CPU. It may be time for a Qualcomm, unless Xiaomi also gets banned from using those chips, like ZTE did. People digging within some Xiaomi firmware discovered hints about the launch of the future tablet and its CPU.

The firmware was obtained by Funky Huawei, who is a specialist in digging in code. It also seems that the Mi Pad 4 will have a 6000 mAh battery and the default brightness of the screen is 320 nits. Oddly enough, the screen has an 18:9 format and the main camera is a 13 megapixel OmniVision OV13855 unit, with F/2.0 aperture and Android 8.1 Oreo is the OS here, with MIUI 9 on top.

The CPU would be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660. We’ve started seeing some Qualcomm-powered Xiaomi phones over the past year, so why not aa tablet? Expect a launch at Computex, if I had to guess.

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Tablet in the Making, but Won’t Come Soon, According to Analyst

By Radu Iorga

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 is a tablet we’ve been covering for a while now, but without actual proof about its existence. There’s a fresh rumor in China that the device is indeed coming, but not anytime soon. Leading credence to the info, a Chinese analyst, Pan Jiutang has the scoop on the product.

Considering he says that the slate is stuck in R&D limbo, we’re in for quite the wait. He shared the info via Weibo, the famous Chinese social network. Sadly, that’s where the info starts and stops. It’s also true that Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun mentioned a while ago that the company was working on a new tablet, but didn’t mention the Mi Pad 4 by name.

Xiaomi also removed its whole tablet lineup from its official site and the tablet category is also gone. This may mean the the firm isn’t going to launch such a device anytime soon, in spite of the Lei Jun statements. We may well see a sort of spinoff company, like Huawei has Honor, Lenovo had ZUK and ZTE has Nubia. the Mi Pad 3 was announced in April last year, so it’s about time for an update.

It’s easy to speculate on what Xiaomi will deliver: probably a bigger diagonal, a MediaPad rival or a Galaxy Tab S rival. I expect the 13 MP camera from the Mi Pad 3 to stay unchanged, we may see a 10 inch and 8 inch version of the device. The screen most likely remains an IPS LCD, since there aren’t many OLED tablets out there. 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM are a given, plus a Snapdragon or MediaTek CPU, more likely MediaTek.

Stereo or even quad speakers should be present, as well as the latet MIUI on top of Oreo.

Xiaomi Gaming Laptop Sees Light of Day, With GTX 1060 Graphics, 16 GB of RAM

By Radu Iorga

Xiaomi had a special day on March 27th, unveiling their Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S handset, plus a few other goodies, smart speaker included. Aside from those they also debuted their first real gaming laptop, prepped for running the fresh Far Cry 5 title. The name is simply: Xiaomi Gaming Laptop. Let’s see what the fuss is all about.

First of all, this beast is 20.9 mm in thickness and has an all metal body. It weighs 2.7 kilograms and comes with a backlit keyboard, with 5 programmable gaming keys, which make gaming more comfy. We also get a 15.6 inch Full HD display with very narrow bezels. The screen has a wide 72% NTSC color gamut and offers a 178 degree wide angle view. Hooking up the device to two 4K monitors is also on the table.

The Xiaomi Gaming Laptop packs two 3W speakers with Dolby Panorama Sound and inside we find a 7th gen CPU, a Core i5 or Core i7, coupled with 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD plus 1 TB of HDD. On the graphics side, there’s either GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1060. The airing system is excellent, courtesy of some badass fans. The heat dissipation area has increased by 50% compared to other laptops and the larger opening is also a big plus.

A large heat pipe is also here, plus ultra slim turbine blades, all of these combined make the laptop get a speed boost of around 20%. On the connectivity front there’s USB Type-C (one of them), 4 USB 3.0 ports and a Gigabit Ethernet, plus HDMI. The Core i7, 16 GB RAM and GTX 1060 model is priced at $1432 and the cheaper one with Core i5 and GTX 1050 Ti goes for $955.

The product goes on sale in China starting on April 13.
